Hi Anders you said As the system administrator you can put it in the system menu. How would I go about doing that John Proctor.

Ok Anders I downloaded Forte onto the root Desktop. I then ran chmod to make executable, and the run the downloaded binary from the root desktop. It then asked me for the directory in which to install so I entered: /root/
Well, this is your problem. You should have put it in a directory where your students have permission to see it. The only user permitted to use root's home directory is root.
I installed it in /opt/forte_jdk as the installer suggested by default.
But when I log in as any other user (accept for root) I cant obtain an icon or any way of running forte.
As the system administrator you can put it in the system menu, or you can instruct the students to right-click on the desktop, select new->Link to application, give them the path to the executable and there's a nice desktop icon in the icons directory where the runide.sh file is.

Well, pretty much as Ben said. As root, you create a file called something like Forte.desktop, and give it permissions 644 (chmod 644 Forte.desktop) The file should contain something like this [Desktop Entry] Comment= Exec=/opt/forte_jdk/forte4j/bin/runide.sh Icon=/opt/forte_jdk/forte4j/bin/icons/ide.ico Name=Forte Path= Terminal=0 TerminalOptions= Type=Application X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false X-KDE-Username= If you installed to another directory, change the paths accordingly. Now, where you put this file depends a little on what sort of menus you're using. If your students are using SuSE defaults, you can put it in /etc/opt/kde3/share/applnk/SuSE Or in one of the subdirectories there. Each subdirectory represents a submenu. The next time your students log in they'll have the new item in their menus. HTH Anders
