[opensuse] error: failed to stat /home/david/.gvfs: Permission denied
Listmates, A new error has appeared after the latest set of kde 4.3 updates that related, to all things, gnome? I noticed it doing an update with zypper: Retrieving package libgcj44-jar-4.4.1_20090722-3.1.x86_64 (14/172), 9.9 MiB (10.8 MiB unpacked) Retrieving: libgcj44-jar-4.4.1_20090722-3.1.x86_64.rpm [done (122.3 KiB/s)] Installing: libgcj44-jar-4.4.1_20090722-3.1 [done] Additional rpm output: error: failed to stat /home/david/.gvfs: Permission denied Retrieving package libgcc44-32bit-4.4.1_20090722-8.1.x86_64 (15/172), 55.0 KiB (124.0 KiB unpacked) Retrieving: libgcc44-32bit-4.4.1_20090722-8.1.x86_64.rpm [done (497.2 KiB/s)] Installing: libgcc44-32bit-4.4.1_20090722-8.1 [done] Additional rpm output: error: failed to stat /home/david/.gvfs: Permission denied At first I checked mtab after recently learning the "stat xyz..." meant rpm couldn't find something it thought was mounted. mtab had nothing on .gvfs. The forums held the workaround: <quote> <snip> I read of several workarounds, although upgrading (or forcing a reinstall) of the gvfs packages through zypper or yast seems to fix the issue entirely, especially considering I can see and work with .gvfs on my systems without any issues. =====Workaround #1: fusermount -u $HOME/.gvfs This should unmount the .gvfs mountpoint. It will likely be remounted almost immediately by the 'gvfs-fuse-daemon' daemon... so... killall -9 gvfs-fuse-daemon should kill the little bugger, Although it will likely come back in the future, it's gone for the moment. You might try to see which programs or commands you're running which are invoking the daemon to mount .gvfs. 'gvfsd' is likely also related to this issue, but doesn't seem to be a culprit at this time. <snip> </quote> See: http://forums.opensuse.org/general-chit-chat/392976-very-strange-thing-gvfs.... I haven't tried the reinstall of gvfs yet (I don't want it installed). After killing the mount with fusermount, the errors have stopped for the moment..... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. At first I checked mtab after recently learning the "stat xyz..." meant rpm couldn't find something it thought was mounted. mtab had nothing on .gvfs. The forums held the workaround:
The safest is to just ignore it. Installation will succeed despite of that error message. It's just that rpm stats all directories to have the status should the package want to install into it. This .gvfs issue has just bitten me because the backups of my new 11.1 system have stopped working. I use dirvish for all my systems and rsync is now saying: rsync: readlink_stat("/home/dhoworth/.gvfs" (in root)) failed: Permission denied (13) rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(1397) [generator=2.6.9] So I can't "just ignore it". A little googling has shown me several threads explaining the problem and some possible workarounds: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=534284 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=560658 https://bugs.launchpad.net/altlinux/+source/gvfs/+bug/225361 http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Fedora/2009-07/msg00653.html et seq This seems like a complicated issue with the potential to cause a lot of irritation. Does anybody know the current state/prognosis? Or the best workarounds?
