mencoder dvds ripped won't play in windows
Greetings, I am just curious, what codecs do I need to play back dvds ripped with mencoder, and where do I get them.. Windows media player says it can't locate a suitable codec for play back. I assume there is something fishy with the way I rip the dvd, it does play fine in kaffiene. Here is the command I use...(line probably wrapped) mencoder dvd:// -dvd-device /dev/cdrecorder -o movie.avi -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=1800 Any clues will be greatly appreciated... THANKS Chadley

lavc is DivX compatible - I think xvid can be used to playback DivX content too, but I haven't tried it. If you want to get a whole bunch of codecs all at once, google for the "Nimo Cocec Pack"

If you drop to a command line and play the file with mplayer, you can see what codecs are identified by mplayer. Hans

OK I have tried that codec pack and it doesn't work, the codec that mplayer uses is: Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm:ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4) I have downloaded and installed divx on the PC and yet it still can't find the required codec for windows. Have you any other suggestions.. TIA Chadley

Erm, I hate to say this but if I have read your request correctly then you are looking into why the DVD will not play back properly in Windows? you tried any of the MS Windows forums rather than a Linux one? I'm not berating you for this as I use Windows too but I'm thinking that you may have better luck on a Windows list. My apologies if I have this incorrect. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care this Xmas. I think the Linux angle is the fact that the DVD was created in Linux and plays fine there. Probably not many people on Windows forums know much about mencoder. The same could be said for Windows of Linux people :-) which is what I was getting at. I'm surprised that the self appointed 'list police' haven't jumped on this thread with screams of outrage :-) My whole point is that being as it is a Windwoes issue then somebody on a Windwoes forum may know more than us. Would you ask the members of a Windwoes forum or list why something wouldn't play back in Linux? I'm certainly not berating Chadley just trying to be constructive in offering a better field of information. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Take care this Xmas. I'd think that it is easier to find linux users that know something of windows, than the reverse ;-) I think it is a proper, though perhaps barely proper, question to ask here. The dvd was created in Linux, so I think there might be some one here that knows why it doesn't play in windows, or have a clue. Many of us use both systems. On the other hand, I think not a single of my "windows only" friends would know, and would say something on the line of "that's what comes out of using that..." etc. :-p About the OP question, sorry, I don't know. But I'm interested :-) - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDlziitTMYHG2NR9URAu4SAJ9AlDtMdybHEXvYzuHwiV0UsE8DYgCcDyku +0jW036O1L5+7RSoxbaOAM0= =IoBm -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

LOL!! Seems not many people no much about either, my self included, The solution I found by following advise onlist, which was to play the movie command line with mplayer and see which codec it uses. So I did and after hours of swearing and googling, I found ACE megacodecs, I installed it and the had to modify the ffdshow codec.

Agreed, but usually the people on the linux lists know more about windows to linux and linux to windows compatibility. Hence making this the best place to ask. Further more linux techs are much better techs by far than winodws techs. I can prove that statement, with some personal experiences.. pedestrians run down... 19 of 23 were a result of drinking.

Hi Bryan, As I have learnt it has very little to do with mencoder, it has to do with the codec used by me to rip the DVD, I must just change the codec I specified in mencoder to something more common. Cheers Chadley
