[SLE] clean ftp install from mirror?
Folks - Can I do a clean install of SuSE 6.4 with all updates from ftp.suse.com or a mirror similar to how RedHat does it? I figure this is an easier way to get the newest fixes and a clean install (machine currently has no OS at all). I was unable to find any info on this in the SuSE manual or FAQ. Thanks. - Steve __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages & get email alerts with Yahoo! Well, yes and no. Of course you can install SuSE Linux via ftp. However, we do not integrate updates into the ftp version - you have to install them manually afterwards or you have to create a local copy of the ftp installation tree and replace the packages before starting the installation. The YaST people are working on an automated upgrade module, but it is not ready yet. I successfully upgraded to 6.4 from the SuSE site. I downloaded almost everything into a second HD. Then I used Yast to Upgrade. Download took 4 hours on cable modem- Yast took about 15 hours :) The most difficult problem I found was finding an ftp program which would support high download rates. xftp ran at about 10kb/s while gftp ran at 200-500kb/s. Another problem was that one of the 6.4 directories was full of symlinks, so the gftp tried to download the packages twice. Luckily I caught it in time. There has to be a simpler way. Rob. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one beating my head against the wall here. First I tried to upgrade thru yast using ftp. I must have had my head somewhere it shouldn't have been, because I think I was using the wrong part of yast. Needless to say, it didn't work so good;) ! Next, I found the proper aspect of yast to upgrade with (I think), but it seems that you can only select packages and upgrade from one series at a time while doing this (correct me if I'm wrong here). This was taking _way_ too long, and would still hang on a few packages, and stop the whole process. Plus you have no real indication of whether or not the download is progressing normally, or hung. Then I setup 'mirror' and had visions of downloading everything to a local directory, then upgrading from there. But even though mirror was correctly handling the symlinks, it would hang and stall. So I still don't have my systems updated. Is there anyone out there w/ a workable way of automating this, considering I have a dialup link that pretty much maxs out at 2kbps download? It is a dedicated second line, w/ essentially unlimited access time. Thanks for your time, Monte Bernd Felsche wrote:
