I have installed a new NIC in a SuSE Linux 7.3 system that had one NIC already. I thought it would be pretty easy to make a setup with two LAN address on a system with two NICs, but I have run into some trouble doing this. I need this setup: NIC Module LAN address hostname Old VIA Rhine-II 192.168.1.3 dt.davidlist.dk New RTL8139 192.168.1.4 cvshost.davidlist.dk I make these settings using YaST and I have edited /etc/hosts, so that these two lines appear: 192.168.1.3 dt.davidlist.dk dt 192.168.1.4 cvshost.davidlist.dk cvshost but each time I run SuSEconfig, the lines are reset to: 192.168.1.3 dt.davidlist.dk dt 192.168.1.4 dt.davidlist.dk The idea is that I should have ssh access to 192.168.1.4, setting the listen address on sshd to 192.168.1.4, and I have success issuing 'ssh 192.168.1.4' but since the system should also be accessable from outside my LAN, I need to let the LAN address 192.168.1.4 correspond to a reasonable hostname. Can this be done? Best regards, David List

I have installed a new NIC in a SuSE Linux 7.3 system that had one NIC already. ... but each time I run SuSEconfig, the lines are reset to:
192.168.1.3 dt.davidlist.dk dt 192.168.1.4 dt.davidlist.dk
Set CHECK_ETC_HOSTS="no" in /etc/rc.config. This will prevent SuSEconfig from changing /etc/hosts. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

I'll try it out. Thank you for your answer. Best regards, David List
