what is suse 8.1 professional update
I am a registered user of Suse 8.0 Professional beta :-).. I am thinking of upgrading to the suse 8.1 professional update when it becomes available but I am unsure as to what it contains. Is it just the dvd with no manuals and can a clean install be made with the update without requiring a previous 8.0 installation? All info on the subject will be appreciated Regards, Josef Demergis

CD/DVD contents of the $49.95 Update Edition is identical to Professional Edition, and anyone can actually purchase it. It's available on our own store.suse.com only though. As with the Professional, you can do either a full (new) installation or update an existing previous SuSE Linux installation. Michael

Assuming 8.1 works the same way as the previous versions, 8.1 professional update will be in every way identical with 8.1 prefessional, with 1 DVD and 7 CDs. The only difference is that the "update" version won't include printed manuals (or to be exact, will only include one printed manual detailing the differences from the previous version). It will allow "fresh" installs. Technically I think you need to own a previous version to be allowed to buy the update, but since SuSE's distribution network where I live is THE PITS and has been for a long time, there is no way for the retailers selling the update (yes you read that correctly. SuSE does not sell here at all. Everything is through a very poorly functioning retail network) to know what I have, so at least here anyone can buy an update. //Anders

I can't find it on there. I found Pro and Personal. Is it hidden or just not up there yet?? Tom

store.suse.com sells to Europe? The site indicates that the shipment would be fed-exed from the US to Europe, but that can't be right for a product that originates in Germany can it? I've looked at www.suse.de/en but all I can find there is the statement "We recommend you to order through a local distributor or purchase at a local reseller.". //Anders

Thanks! I thought I clicked on it before and nothing changed. Probably premature clicking on my part. Ordering shortly. Tom On Wed, 2002-09-18 at 11:46, Jerry Feldman wrote:

store.suse.com is outsourced (we design it but actual fulfillment is done by a specialised company) and that company happens to ship worldwide, using UPS, Fedex. If you want to buy in Europe go to our webstore there... Michael

There's no such thing, as far as I can see. suse.de has a web store, suse.co.uk has a web store, but as far as I'm able to read the web page, the rest of us are left in the hands of local retailers. If there is a way to order directly from SuSE for people in Europe outside Germany and the UK I would *love* to know how. Because the retailers here, insofar as they carry SuSE at all, only rarely carry the update, and if they do it's a *long* time after it's released. //Anders

They only sell to Denmark, Greenland and the Faeroe Islands as far as I can tell, and although I'm only 20 minutes away from Copenhagen I don't have a mailing address there. Perhaps I could open a PO Box there :) Or perhaps someone should start up a suse.se?! //Anders

Anders, you could maybe try getting it shipped from the Netherlands. I buy my SuSE stuff from Mensys in Haarlem. They ship very fast... I usually have my stuff at my door within 2 days of the online order assuming they have it in stock. I just checked the website, and they will ship anywhere. http://linux.mensys.nl/indexuk.html They don't have the SuSE8.1 pre-orders up online yet, but they should have it soon. C.
