Hi all,
For some strange reason I can log in as my normal user account without
the password I set being having to be entered???
Even if I reset the password with passwd, I'm still allowed to login
without using it...
I'm abit confused why this has happened should I rtfm or is something
awry...?

Did you play around with your PAM configuration in /etc/pam.conf or /etc/pam.d/* ? It sounds like you removed or deactivated the password check... ;-) Which SuSE (or other distro) version do you use? Kind regards Heiko
I did not mess with pam stuff...;-) But when I do a 'w' I get this? w 5:53pm up 2:48, 3 users, load average: 0.12, 1.02, 1.30 USER TTY FROM LOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT funky :0 console 5:47pm ? 0.00s ? - funky pts/0 - 5:47pm 5:49 0.00s ? - funky pts/1 - 5:47pm 0.00s 0.05s 0.01s w I'm using SuSE 8.1 Pro Tia Dre :-) On Sat, 2003-01-11 at 17:48, Heiko Ettelbrueck wrote:

Check the passwd file and shadow file for corruption or bad/missing data.
If the passwd/shadow have screwed entires then login can't check the
credentials it sometimes does a wierd SIG interrupt and lets anyone login
Try other users and or people that dont exist? Does the same thing happen?

Thanks for that info, you where right on the mark... My /etc/passwd file was missing the 'x' as I'm using the /etc/shadow file. I replaced the 'x' and viola all is working again as it should do :-> Cheers Dre ;) On Sun, 2003-01-12 at 01:05, Paul wrote:
