[SLE] Athlon - Socket A or Slot A???
Hi, I'm about to buy a K7, but there are things that i don't get..... What's all this mess about the SLOT A or SOCKET A, what's the difference, something about the Thunderbird vs Classic. No vendor here in Argentina seems knowing anything about it, so i am lost. I know there are some new chipset's but is AMD changing the athlon bus. Well does matters anyway...... Perhaps any of you can give me some information of what is happening. Thanks in advance..... AMD just came out with two new chips. The Duron and the Thunderbird. The duron is being marketed to compete with the Intel Celeron processor line, while the Thunderbird is meant to compete against PIIIs.The thunderbird is being called Athlon, because it is an improved Athlon. If you are going to get a new system, then definately try to get a new Athlon. As for the Slot A vs. Socket A, well... According to AMD the slot or socket makes no difference. The clasic Athlon used a slot design, but the new Athlons will be using a socket. At least that is how it sounded from reading AMD's web site. Hope this helps. AMD produces Slot A versions of the Thunderbird as well. See http://www.heise.de/ct/00/14/032/ (German). You can find a list of boards that support the Slot A Thunderbird there.
