[opensuse] Help with Java installation on SuSE 10.3
From here I tried to install Java from Yast but I got lost when I had to select a directory pathname. I browsed through the directory
I'm trying to install the GUI for R on SuSE 10.3. The package and instructions are from: http://rosuda.org/JGR/down.shtml Since I need the latest Java package I clicked on Linux Tips page There are no specific instructions for SuSe 10.3 so i kind of followed the instructions listed for SuSE 10.2 I clicked on SuSE Java page pub/opensuse/distribution on different mirror sites and was unable to find Java. I got lost in the maze of links that brought me nowhere. Can you please sow me the right way ? Thank you in advance. It is in the non-oss repository. Easiest way to add it is to use the community repository module of yast. After you have added at least the oss and non-oss directory, just do a search in the yast software manager and install all the java bits you need. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Thank you very much.
I did that. Still R GUI for SUSE 10.3 does not work.

Hi Maura, in case your problem persists, what is your java version on your machine? Find out with ex. "rpm -qa |grep java" if you are getting multiple java packages or multiple versions of one package or both, this basically does not do any harm. However I would uninstall anything that is unneeded or to low in versionno. , just for the sake of clarity. Now if it works, enjoy. If not, we need to find out, what the "java" command does (not) on your system. I recall there was a bug. For example with an installed SUN JRE 1.6, I was not able to even issue the "java" command, before I repaired a broken link. kind regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Do you remember which one that was? My java 1.6 no longer works. It did for a bit and I could run, say, eclipse. But something messed it up and I do not think the java itself is installed correct.
kind regards Eberhard

solution 4 the last 2 Bugs i had: 1. resolves a Java-Bug: sed -i 's/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g' /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so 2. corrects the links which Roger mentioned /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --auto javaplugin /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --auto javac /usr/sbin/update-alternatives --auto java But please give us the output if you type java on commandline! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
