Last week I performed the update 8.0 -> 8.1 (official SuSE cd´s) All went well. Only had to download NVIDIA drivers for 8.1 The after some days I started Yast to look at the bootloader configuration. I had noticed that it said "append hdc=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi" and i thought one time hdc is enough and changed it accordingly. Upon restart I got the message: VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem) KERNEL PANIC: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 03:43 I can startup with the suse cd1 -> installation -> Choose language -> boot existing system. Then all starts normally. Maybe you have to post your /etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst for
people to help you.

Leo,
I have a dumb question. Did you remember to run lilo after making the changes to lilo.confg? That has bit me a time or two. Richard
I did leo -- == Linux SuSE 8.1 - KDE 3.0.3 - Kmail 1.4.3 ==
Hi, Did you run 'mkinitrd' too? That must be run if you have made some changes in what modules that should be loaded at boot. Some related info here: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/81_ide-scsi.html Check which modules you have in INITRD_MODULES in etc/sysconfig/kernel. Regards, Jostein

Can you try to boot "failsafe" from the lilo graphic prommp? If you can
then there is problem with your default kernel.

Maybe it's not your case, but check the file /etc/sysconfig/kernel. You should have one line with this at least: INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs ide-scsi" If those two modules are not ther, add them, and run mk_initrd, and lilo if you uses it. -- Cheers, Carlos
