Is anyone aware of a bug in /proc/uptime? I am strongly suspicious that mine may have reset itself incorrectly (i.e., without a reboot involved). According to /proc/uptime, my server restarted a couple of days ago. I have a network up/down log that shows no activity in that time frame. Also, my user account stayed logged on, with the same apps open from well before that time. In other words, if it weren't for /proc/uptime, I have no symptoms of a reboot. -- Daryl Lee Open the Present, it's a Gift.

and you were almost to count 50 days. :-) -- Togan Muftuoglu | Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer | Please reply to the list; http://susefaq.sf.net | Please don't put me in TO/CC. Nisi defectum, haud refiecendum

Ah, c'mon Togan, tell him about the new time slicer that cuts down the uptime counter in favor of more clock ticks for a speedier desktop experience. This was explained on this list by someone just last week I believe. Search the archive via google... Stan
Thanks, Stan. That's a more helpful bread crumb. I wore out three Google servers looking for this. Togan's FAQ is unsearchable, so it was no help. Suse's FAQ didn't respond to "uptime." Is there a substitute for the "uptime" command that's in SuSE 9.0 that seems incompatible with their /proc/uptime interface? Do I sound irritated? On Thu, 2004-02-05 at 22:42, S.R.Glasoe wrote:

You should have searched SDB for "desktop". The article in question is http://portal.suse.de/sdb/en/2003/10/90_scheduling.html Regards, -Kastus

Thanks Kastus. What isn't explicitly mentioned in this article is what happens to uptime when the desktop value is on the boot line in grub/lilo. Uptime is cut to 1/10 its normal value. Thus uptime is reset for you just under 50 days (49.7 or so) where it normally wouldn't get reset for just under 500 days (497 or so). The email in the list explains it better than this. Stan
Thanks to both of you. It never occurred to me that a problem with "uptime" would be searched for under the topic "desktop." I'm going to miss that little message I get from time to time saying my server's been up for, say, 200 days. Sniff, sniff. On Thu, 2004-02-05 at 23:50, S.R.Glasoe wrote:
