Hi folks, For some reason I can no longer play audio CDs in the SuSE 8.2 version (KDE) when logged in as my normal User. If as Root then all is good. I normally have used Audacity, KsCD, and XMMS to play/record wavs and mp3s, but now none of these tools will work when logged on as User. Audacity reports that There was an error initializing the audio i/o layer. You will not be able to record or play audio. Error: Host Error. And when I put a CD audio disk in the drive, open the KsCD Player module I get this error: CD-ROM read or access error (or no audio disc in drive). Please make sure you have access permissions to: /dev/cdrom When I try to use XMMS it reports: Couldn't open Audio Please Check That: You have the correct output plugin selected. No other programs is blocking the sound card. Your soundcard is configured properly. Well.... I think the sound card is configed OK, since as Root all works. I have no idea how to check the other two suggestions though... I haven't changed or fooled with permissions that I know of but looking at the /dev/cdrom path and permissions say: Owner: root Permissions: disk rw------- If I log on as root and try to change the permissions, it does not allow it. (fields greyed out) Also things like the mixer board (Smixer) will run in the root logon but not as User. Reading through some previous users' problems, I got the idea to rerun alsaconf and the test file plays loud and clear. Which makes sense i guess because I had to run the alsaconf as su and as I said, as Root all is well. I also tried running Kmix as was suggested, but it doesn't seem to have the options described in the archive notes... I don't think it is working right either though because the window is just blank with no slider controls showing. Just a few menu choices. Otherwise the CD reader works for installing software and such. It will read data discs, I just cannot do any audio tasks as User. Help <grin> Any Ideas are appreciated!
