Hello, once again I hope for help. :)
I installed SuSE 6.3 on a new box this weekend (everything went fine) and my network card a 3com 3c509b was also installed, with sucess (after trying a bit. :P).. here comes the tricky part. I have a box that stands as gateway for the world, it works just fine, my windows box works fine behind it. But this new linux box isnt able to communicate with it! I have also windows installed on the new box so i tried to see if the netcard was faulty, no, windows has contact.. so I am wondering, what have i forgotten ? I have enterd a non taken internal ip, netmask and the ip for the gateway.. but still cant get any contact.. please help, its very important
What is the IP on your faulty box? and the netmask? And what is the IP for the gateway? If you for instance have 10.0.0.2 with a mask of 255.255.255.0 on one box it cannot find a route to anything not beginning with 10.0.0. So, if the gateway's IP is not within the same subnet as the IP on the other box, you'll never get anywhere. Also, what error message are you getting? okay, the box name is artemis and has ip 192.168.1.3 the gateway has 192.168.1.1 And please lay in mind that i have the exact ip settings in windows and it works..

I have tried alot of stuff now.. I have tried editing lilo.conf adding append="9,210,eth0" because in windows the card has irq 9 and io 210 (it has io 300 and irq 10 in linux) but without sucess.. i have tried pinging the machine from the gateway, no sucess their either.. im thinking about trading this card for a NE2000.. :/ This is over the box with no net connection (yet, i hope): ifconfig eth0 eth Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:5A:53:05:1D inet addr:192.168.1.3 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame0 TX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 Interrupt:10 Baseadress:0x300 And this is over the gateway: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 40:01:00:00:22:D3 inet addr:194.165.253.43 Bcast:194.165.253.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:2553805 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:1 TX packets:2755266 errors:8 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:8 collisions:125551 txqueuelen:100 Interrupt:3 Base address:0x300 WebdeX WCT #1857 webbie@phanatic.net -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Hmm.. Very strange. Try 3c90xcfg.exe in DOS. Try to config the card so that it can't set anything itself (link type, modem, etc). Also, set the card to be used in a server instead of a workstation. It helps. mmmm.... why would it be changing to IRQ3 in the second case. Do you have something else setting on IRQ 10. Hi, I'm unclear on this point. His client eth0 shows 192.168.1.3, while his gateway eth0 shows 194.165.253.43 Doesn't something have to be done with route to pass data from one network to another? About a failing nic, won't problems with irq's etc show up in /var/log/messages or dmesg upon boot? tia teve. ------------------------------------------- Steven Pauly (281) 496-8041 Houston, Tx stevep@brokersys.com stevep@linux-shell.net SuSE Linux 6.3 2.2.14 (cp /dev/null microsoft) -------------------------------------------- On Sun, 23 Jan 2000, the webster wrote:

Have you checked the physical media and hardware between the two boxes? That would have been my first port of call before checking software.. Also, is there a link passing between the two? If it is a shared media network (hub, not switch) try loading up iptraf on the server and running a MAC scan to see which stations are transmitting.. Maybe the problem is in your Network drivers for the card? Just a sugestion.. Cya Matthew Matthew King: Sys Admin, Quakers Hill High School. My ICQ#: 2342475 Message me!
