Is there a GUI on SuSE 9.1 for rpm management. I am ok with rpm command line comands such as rpm -qa | grep whatever, but I was wondering if there was a GUI interface either in KDE or elsewhere. What I really need is something smart enough to link an app name to a rpm. For example I can do listhub@libros:~> rpm -qa wine which returns: wine-20040213-41 However, just for an example, if I do listhub@libros:~> rpm -qa Mahjongg I get nada because Mahgongg is in some game package. Maybe kpackage, then, or a gnome equivilent. Install it with yast. :) BTW, to find the package associated with a file: rpm -qf /path/to/file or if the file is in your $PATH rpm -qf `which file` --Danny

I am looking for something that will tell me an application is in an rpm which I do NOT have installed so I know what rpm to install to get the app running.
Then YaST is what you're looking for. Of course, this only covers packages on the installation media. For other stuff, it'll just have to be a web search. The YaST Install and Remove module's search function can perform this task if you select the "Provides" check-box in the Search pane. You also get a variety of searching including full regular expressions.

For something not installed, but available on the DVD/CDs, Yast is your best bet. Pin would also do what you ask but is not GUI. Properly configured, Synaptic through apt is another possibility to do what you want. I haven't used it, but Red Carpet is another. These last 2 can access on line repositories that expand your possibilities beyond the DID/Cs. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

To get some information about a package: rpm -qip package.rpm To list the files in a package: rpm -qlp package.rpm kpackage package.rpm To show what dependencies a package *provides* after it's installed: rpm -q --provides -p package.rpm To show what dependencies a package *requires* met before it can be installed: rpm -q --requires -p package.rpm To learn more about what rpm can do: man rpm look for "PACKAGE QUERY OPTIONS" on that man page (search man by pressing the '/' key and then typing your case-insensitive search string) --Danny

pin can show you package something is in. For package management yast2 and kpackage come to mind. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2) * PLEASE only reply to the list *
