[opensuse] 11.0 and newer "Advanced Format" drives
Looking to add some new drives and can't seem to find any info about whether my current 11.0 install will properly format the newer advanced format drives. Or read them if I format them with a newer version. Can't find any definate info. And, yes, I know 11.0 is EOL. However, I'm not in a hurry to replace it if I don't have to. I highly recommend avoiding advance format drives (4KB physical sector) with anything older than 11.3. It can be done, but... You may get it to work with full performance and functionality, but it will take a lot of skill and selection of userspace partitioning tools. Your partitioning tools will refuse to work with these drives if they were first partitioned in 11.3 (or other 4KB sector aware environments.) If you do 100% of your partitioning in 11.3 (etc.) then older kernels should work fine and perform well. The only problem the old kernel / userspace tools will have is the actual partitioning process. If you do your partitioning with pre-11.3 tools, they will appear to work, but your write performance will be horrible. (ie. 2 or 3x slower than a 512B sector drive due to non-aligned writes. Only 11.3 attempts to align the partitions with the physical 4KB sectors on those advance format drives.)
