[opensuse] virtualbox: 11.3 host / 11.1 guest - won't install
All, This is my first effort to run VirtualBox. I seem to have the basics going. I'm trying to do a network install of 11.1 for now. I downloaded the net install ISO. When I start the new VM it asks for the location of the ISO and boots the CD. I select that install option on the screen, and it says kernel loading. After it loads, it gives me a warning that I don't have 32-bit color selected on my desktop. When I say ok, it goes to a black screen and stays there (for at least several minutes.) Am I doing something wrong. (FYI: I'm running the 2.6.36 kernel an vboxdrv module currently. I'm going backdown to the normal kernel and see if that helps.) I reinstalled the kernel and modules from the official 11.3 repos. Created a new VM and tried to install 11.1 network CD. Same behavior as before. Is this supposed to work? Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Is this supposed to work?
Yes, it's supposed to work. First thing... VirtualBox isn't sensitive to Kernel versions like VMWare is. It runs fine even on the latest RCs. You can run the host on whatever kernel you want - just make sure to have either installed DKMS so it can auto-build the kernel modules on boot when the kernel changes, or manually build the kernel modules after a kernel change. Ok the problem.... - What version of VirtualBox are you using? The one from the VBox website? or the openSUSE repos Did you install 4.0.0? or an older 3.x version? - When you defined the new VM, did you take default settings all along for your new VM? - How much virtual system RAM is defined for the VM? (vs real system RAM) I've found that the default it gives simply isn't enough (eg 128 or 256mb) to install openSUSE and have had to increase it to at least 1Mb. - Did you tinker with the video settings? Have you gone into the VM video settings and tried maxing out the virtual video memory? (I always set it to 128Mb, and select Enable 3D Acceleration) - On your host... are you running in 24bit color depth? What real video card/driver? I've got multiple versions of openSUSE, and about a dozen other distros installed in VirtualBox and have never ran into an error like what you describe. It "just works" and works very well. I've never seen this error on booting/installing a VM. C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ok the problem.... - What version of VirtualBox are you using? The one from the VBox website? or the openSUSE repos Did you install 4.0.0? or an older 3.x version?
I tried both 3.x and 4.0. 3.x from the standard 11.3 repos. The kernel and vboxdrv came from the standard repos. 4.0 I got by doing a zypper dup --from Tumbleweed. (see http://en.opensuse.org/Tumbleweed) Tumbleweed has a 2.6.36 kernel and includes vbox support modules / userspace I believe.
- When you defined the new VM, did you take default settings all along for your new VM?
Yes, except the i/o cache for the "virtual sata controller". When I went with default, vbox complained that it was not safe since my VM was hosted on a ext4 filesystem.
- How much virtual system RAM is defined for the VM? (vs real system RAM) I've found that the default it gives simply isn't enough (eg 128 or 256mb) to install openSUSE and have had to increase it to at least 1Mb.
My test machine is an older laptop with 1GB of ram. I allocated 512 MB for the VM. It was also the default.
- Did you tinker with the video settings? Have you gone into the VM video settings and tried maxing out the virtual video memory? (I always set it to 128Mb, and select Enable 3D Acceleration)
I stuck with defaults. I think both 2D and 3D acceleration was off.
- On your host... are you running in 24bit color depth? What real video card/driver?
I misstated the error. The complaint is that I am running 16-bit color depth and vbox wants 32-bit, and yes I am. With 11.3 I don't remember how to change that? (If it is the likely issue, I can go back through my notes.)
I've got multiple versions of openSUSE, and about a dozen other distros installed in VirtualBox and have never ran into an error like what you describe. It "just works" and works very well. I've never seen this error on booting/installing a VM.
11.3 host. I tried 11.1 / 11.2 / 11.3 all with the network installer. All fail shortly after the 16-bit graphic complaint. I also tried the 11.1 KDE live CD. Same issue.

Most likely that it has too little RAM + swap. I got very slow installation when allocated RAM was around 750MB, which would be indication that it uses swap. Installation from Live CD has a problem even when it is started without booting into live system, most likely because installer loads the whole CD in order to access its content that is needed during installation. I would try DVD or NET installation on systems with relatively small RAM. Also for the host, you can load some lightweight desktop, turn off any system service that is not essential, then start Virtual Box and see how much RAM is used. After that assign more then 512 MB during installation and lower it after that. One 32 bit machine without running applications, even under KDE should not ask for more then 150-170MB. I just checked my old 32 bit box and it was about 160MB with KDE4. Under IceWM it is about 130MB that after some time drops to bit under 100MB. Virtual box is not large too, about 12MB is difference on 64 bit machine. It seems that I would be able to run virtual installation with assigned 1.2 GB to virtual machine (box is 1.5 GB) and still be able to use the host system without thinking how it will affect its stability. I'm sure that VBox will complain when so much RAM is assigned to virtual system, but it will not prevent me to use it. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Greg, What is the processor in your 'older' laptop? Mine has an Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5800 mobile processor. Two of the battery saving features of this processor are: 1. a smaller L2 cache 2. Intel(R) VT-x is not built into the chip Check your processor here http://ark.intel.com/VTList.aspx hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Greg,

older is pre-core 2 for sure. Its a P4 Mobile 1.7 GHz. So it may be too old for what I'm trying to do.

It definitely is pre-VT. :) OS 11.2 Net Install is actually chugging along now (very slowly), so I have the basics working. I bumped the 11.1 net and KDE live CD to 736 MB, and they still appear to freeze on the black screen. 11.1 is my real goal. I may just have to use a better machine.

Carl

Ouch. VBox will work on that machine... but work and usable may be two different things. On RAM. VBox states the minimum RAM required on the Host is 512MB. Anything less than 2Mb is going to be trouble - as in performance trouble. Either you're not going to have enough virtual RAM for your guest to operate smoothly, or your Linux host is going to be swapping... a lot. On CPU. You can run it on a P4 Mobile 1.7GHz CPU, but again, significant performance hits to do pretty much anything. I have run a guest on an 1.6 GHz Atom CPU... but it was painfully slow. Another thought.... have you considered running the PUEL version (plus the USB extension) from the VBox website instead of the OSE from the openSUSE repos? Consistently - at least for me - I've had issues with the OSE version that were not present in the PUEL version. Thanks, I'll either switch to newer hardware or do a physical install. I was just trying to leverage an unused laptop as a test machine for Evergreen. Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You still could :-) Try installing your VM on another host and transfer over the fully installed/setup openSUSE11.1 VDI file. That may work around the install speed and other issues.... worth a try. I've had success doing things this way for other hardware. I've got a small set of VDIs tucked away on my network, and I can pull them down and load/boot them up when needed. Yes, host is opensuse 11.3 I tested with both 2.6.34 and 2.6.36. Both from opensuse repos.
and have you turned on 2d/3d acceleration? i mean what are the settings on the vm?
Both off. Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
