This message and its contents are subject to the conditions set out at the end of this email ****************************************************************************** Hi, I have a peculiar problem and it has sparked big disagreements with the NT Administrators here! Myself and a couple of collegues have Linux Workstations (we are the guinea pigs!) When using KMail, 2 of my collegues get their attachments in wonderful clarity and they can click on them to open them of save them or whatever.... As for myself it is a different story...... My downloads get brought down in TNEF format. I have to save them to disk and use "tnef" on them or fentun or similar. My question is why does this happen? We are using an Exchange/Outlook mail infrastructure and seeing as all 3 of us had KMail installed straight off the CD, I queried if it could be an exchange setting, and got immediately blasted by the NT guys! Anyone got any suggestions? p.s. I am working on persuading the company to migrate to a Linux email system...... Anyone got any suggestions?
Evolution handles tnef attachments, and it'll also talk to your Exchange server as an LDAP server for the addressbook, and with Connector, you can share all the calendars. Why not grab the latest stable version from www.usr-local-bin.org? :) -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.1) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

That's *a* solution, but not *the* solution to the particular problem he's having. I too, would like to know why 2 Kmail clients open TNEF emails fine, and the third doesn't. Was the configuration on each one setup by each individual for his machine? Very curious, I hope someone has a clue about this one. Not really a clue, since I never get tnef mail, thankfully. But comparing the installed packages on the machines would be a good place to start, I think. There's a package called tnef.rpm, I don't know if that's what kmail uses to unpack tnef, but I would check if that perhaps is installed on two of the machines but not the third. But that *really* is just a guess.

TNEF is a binary format that Exchange and Outbreak understand ..only these two POS pieces of software do this by default. The only way you'll get around this is to get a utility (there are 4-5 of them on freshmeat.net) and have your program call it to unpack it. You can't get around this..even Windows users who don't use these programs have to deal with this. Either their program understands how to unpack it or they find one of the utils. As was mentioned here Evolution understands this file because it has built in support for understanding it..other programs however do not. Your Exchange admins can't really do anything about it..it's part of the software and they will only get defensive and cranky if you point this out to them..it will invade their "comfort zone" as one of my old bosses put it. So it's just a matter of living with it and having your mail client call the util to unpack these silly files which actually have no value other then to make non-exchange / non-outlook users pissy. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. Chris, Update KDE! Your problems with small columns in the kdeaddressbook will be gone! Your problem was a known bug with earlier versions. Patrick -- --- KMail v1.5.9.1i --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.1 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...
