[opensuse] kde 4.5 - did a dbus update come with that?
All, I see there is now a repo just for kde 4.5 on OS 11.3 http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/45/openSUSE_11.3/ I'm intriguied, but I also read that upgrading can cause problems if you don't also update to a new version of dbus. And that new version of dbus was not in OBS as of a couple weeks ago. Any update on that? Greg, you can check to see what dbus version is there. 1.2x causes problems, the mouse-over hangs are fixed in dbus 1.3x, but 1.4 is current. So as long as you can find dbus 1.3+ you will be in good shape with 4.5.1. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. David, do you happen to know any of the specific issues with dbus 1.2? It's just I've been running KDE 4.5.1 on DBUS 1.2 since the packages were released on OBS, I'd heard there may be issues but I can't say I've really noticed any problems. I'm loathe to go updating things just for the hell of it but it would be good to know what the issues are in case I run into them. The symptoms are apparently random crashes and freezes. The cause is a lack of thread-safety in dbus <=1.2. Dolphin is heavily multithreaded so it runs into the bug frequently. Bug here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208921 When openSUSE 11.3 was released, we considered including the fix as a patch to dbus 1.2 but it was deemed too risky to the rest of the apps using dbus in a way that doesn't trigger the bug. Now that the patch has been released in dbus 1.4, I've linked dbus-1 from openSUSE Factory into KDE:Distro:Factory for openSUSE 11.3. It will take a while to hit mirrors. We'll discuss adding this to KDE:Release:45. Aaah! This is actually very familiar and at one point was the cause of a lot of frustration for me but found a work around that gave me suitable stability (see below). I suppose this is somewhat anecdotal, but the work around for me was to use dolphin without the information panel open. I had previously (wrongly) assumed it was nepomuk related as I had been using that from an early stage. Closing and not using the information panel stopped the crashes but makes nepomuk functionality harder to use. -- “What can be asserted without proof can be dismissed without proof.” - Christopher Hitchens -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Speaking of that information panel... Why is it that when the selection or mouse over lands on a .mp3 or .aac file the information panel shows a mini music player with a button that is active, but does nothing? Is there some missing plug in on my system that would actually let me play/sample music from that info panel? -- Explain again the part about rm -rf / -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes; if you had the right codecs (e.g. by using phonon-backend-xine and libxine1-codecs from packman), you would be able to play those files right in Dolphin. Regards, Tejas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

DOH! More novell breakage. I wish they would pop up something and advise that the required software could not be installed due to legal reasons. I thought all along that Dolphin was just broken. -- _____________________________________ At one time I had a Real Sig. Looks like dbus-1.4 is now in the kde4.5 release repo, so I'm going give it a shot. https://build.opensuse.org/package/files?package=dbus-1&project=KDE%3ARelease%3A45 Thanks Will, Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

David, Searching OBS for dbus-1, I don't see 1.3 or 1.4 for 11.3 (1.4 is in factory) http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=dbus-1&baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.3&lang=en&exclude_filter=home%3A&exclude_debug=true Thus my confusion about why the KDE team made a 4.5 repo if it relies on a version of dbus that is not available in the OBS. Sorry, I got dbus-1.4 about a week ago in an Arch update. I know there are some SuSE packages, but since webpin is busted for 11.3 you will have to get somebody on the list to post a repo where it can be found. You can try zypper se -s, but that would only get packages in your configured repositories. It sure is a PITA not having a working webpin for 11.3 (of all thing not webpin). Evidently nobody implemented the standard webpin 1X indexes for 11.3 and webpin2 isn't ready yet so we are just --- waiting, waiting, waiting... How long ago was 11.3 released?? -- David C.
