RE: [SLE] Help with APT on SuSE 7.3
Did you execute "apt-get update" before the "apt-get check" command?
Yep... That was it! I did it, and now I got: plin:~ # apt-get check Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these. Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: Netscape6: Depends: libodbc.so but it is not installable Depends: libodbcinst.so but it is not installable E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f. What would you NOW suggest to do? Thank you!

Install unixODBC-2.2.3-92 :) http://mirror.usu.edu/mirrors/suse/i386/current/suse/i586/?C=N&O=D It's solves the dependency. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

Sorry about that. I brainfarted and sent before I realized it was a 7.3 question. :/ I'd get Mozilla 1.4 from Mozilla.org because it's Netscape 7.1 without all the added stuff. Again ..sorry for the quick send. :/ -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

So you would suggest tu UNINSTALL Netscape6 and install mozilla-1.4 instead? In fact, if I try to "apt-get -f install" it tells me it's going to REMOVE Netscape6! What now?

Yes. I'd suggest removing Netscape entirely and installing Mozilla 1.4 because it's up to date. Netscape 6 is Mozilla 1.0.2.1 with AOL addons and Netscape 7.1 is 1.4 with AOL addons. You'd be much happier with Mozilla 1.4. :) After you remove Netscape then you won't see the apt warnings anymore. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

The only drawback is that only mozilla-1.3 is available as suse rpm. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Yes, that's the only downside effect... :( Does anybody know some better and more up-to-date repositories for SuSE 7.3? Thanks... BTW: the system is asking me to get about 340 MB of upgrades via APT. Should I let it download all the stuff and proceed to the upgrade of my SuSE 7.3? The fact that's keeping me back from this is that I don't know _WHAT_ has to be upgraded!

Run APT like that: apt-get -s upgrade | more It will just simulate the upgrade (the -s flag) and you can read through all

If you spot only a few packages you absolutely want to upgrade then you can: apt-get -s install thispackage to see what would happen, then run without -s if you liked it. APT is cool...:-) Cheers, HÖ

Great deal!
But don't you know some GUI for APT on SuSE? Like synaptic or aptitude?
Thanks... I don't need GUI for APT, tested aptitute in Debian but it didn't give me anything that I can't get with commands.

Thanks... You can download synaptic at the same place you got apt. . . http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/apt-0.5.4/RPMS.tested/ I think it's also possible to do a apt-get synaptic, depending on what's in your sources.list, but that may only work for 8.2 -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro
