one question: is it really impossible to make Firefox under Linux (SuSE 10.0) a little less SLO-O-OW? Its awful how this just-what-i-need browser locks up when opening page with flash animation, opening page with who-knows-what-else, how long it takes to start and lots of other things. Why? Why is the very same browser works fast (and i mean really fast) under Windows on my desktop? I like Linux, and i dislike Windows. Seems to me that after i started Opera once (just to compare) i start to dislike Firefox too. Firefox 1.5 is great browser. And i don't know how to make Opera (8.52) have the same functionality. So i whant to use Firefox, but i just can't... wait all that time it "works".
Does anyone has any comments or suggestions on how to make Firefox work fast or how to make Opera function like Firefox with FlashGot, RIP, Adblock, ForecastFox.
Hmmm, I find this strange. In both SuSE 10 and Win 2000 I can start Opera first then start Firefox...guess which actually loads first? Firefox everytime. Perhaps it's the way I have my PCs set up? -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way.

Same for me. Firefox loads flash sites with no delays.

Well my Firefox does play (most) Flash animations. However, when I tried these 3 sites I was alerted with messages to upgrade Flash Player. Message read: "Express Install is not supported by this version of Flash Player. To upgrade, please visit Flash Player download center." So I went to the download center and the version that's being offered is 7,0,61,0 (November 2005). That is the version I'm currently using! So I'm stumped why it's prompting me to upgrade when I have the most current version installed. At least I think so. I checked about:plugins and found the following: Shockwave Flash 7.0 r61 and below that another Shockwave Flash 7.0 r25. So I'm wondering if maybe I have a conflict? Should I delete 7.0 r25 and, if yes, how do I delete it from the installed plugins? Thanks! Gil
Hi. Another unpleasant thing is that when i read messages on Gmail if there are more than one message in the thread (and their contents displayed not hidden) then scrolling through page is slow (and, of course, not smooth at all). After i "minimize" all messages (except last, which is always displayed), that only their headers shown, scrolling works as it should. Strange. Do I whant too much? Or do I work to little? Have fun, Roma.

Mine didn't lock up my browser, but I have noticed sites that do lock up my browser if they have a lot of flash there. Can't tell you any off the top of my head at the moment. The sites that Kai gave as examples all use flashplayer 8 which is not available for linux yet. Therefore, none of them work currently. I do notice that Firefox is very slow on my machine especially when flash is involved. I had the same problem with Ubuntu and the solution there was to scrap the distro provided Firefox and load the one directly from Mozilla. This seemed to make the browser run much faster on Ubuntu. Haven't tried that on SuSE now that I've moved my laptop back from Ubuntu. -- ~R~ ---------------------------------------------------------- Politicians are the same all over. I just got blank pages... Oh, wait a minute, I have a flash blocker which disables flash... 99% of the flash I see are adverts that overlay what I went to the site for in the first place, so I just disable it by default now... It shouldn't cause a conflict as firefox normally just uses the first plugin it finds. But it may be using the older one, so yes, I would uninstall it if I were you. rpm -e flash-player perhaps? I don't know that this is what you've done, but just in case: You can't make these kinds of changes with Firefox running. Also, it used to be the case in earlier versions that you had to delete the file ~/.mozilla/pluginreg.dat for plug-in changes to take effect. This caused Mozilla and later Firefox to re-register the installed plug-ins. regards, Carl

SUSE 10 installs a plugin called something like dragonegg. It is the culprit. Remove the package. To see the name, in the browser go to about:plugins and look for a name like that, and then remove the rpm. As I have already done this I do not have the exact name handy. After this, PDFs work as expected. I did not have to play with links. Just install acrobat and the reader plugin should be available. Hi Digz, Glad it worked out and you're very welcome. Now I'd like to ask that you please: * edit your reply-to addresses before clicking 'send' so you only send one copy to the list. Subscribers get the copy distributed by the list and don't need a second one sent to them directly. * trim your quotes down to the context of your message. Subscribers presumably see the entire thread so lengthy quotes are more cumbersome than helpful. * reduce your signature down to something reasonable, like four to five succinct (max 72 character) lines. If this means changing your e-mail subscription address to avoid incorporating required company language, please do so. Some subscribers pay for Internet access by the volume of material transmitted and received. regards, Carl

I had this same problem (see my post from yesterday SUSE 10- Firefox Plug-Ins Broken). None of my plug-ins that I tested were working (acroread, flash, etc.). A check of about:plugins showed that all of my plugins except the default plugin (libnullplugin.so) were enabled. I resolved the problem by disabling the acroread plug-in and closing firefox. I then (for the second time) re-installed the acroread plug-in per the instructions here: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/faqs/firefox-linux.html#install-acroread When I was re-installing the plug-in, it complained that it was already installed and asked if I wanted to install it anyway. I chose to install it anyway. I then opened up firefox, enabled the pdf plugin, closed firefox, re-booted my computer and now all of my plug-ins seem to work. Very strange, but it worked for me. Hope this helps. Mike
