[opensuse] symbolic link to directory on remote machine
Hi, I would like to know if it possible to create a symbolic link on machine1 pointing to the folder residing on machine 2. something like this for example: mkdir /dev/test ln -s //1.1.1.1/dev/important /dev/test But the above command did not work. Any other options are also welcome. Thanks in advance. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, it will not.

You have first to mount the remote directory locally, then you can symlink the locally mounted remote dir. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I'm actually trying to access a raw partition residing in machine 2
from machine 1. Since raw partition do not have any filesystem (i
doubt if it can be mounted), do you think symlinks can be created

Symlinks, certainly will not work, they need a filesystem. Exporting raw partitions, I have no idea how to do that. I'll think about it. dd and some network tool? :-? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I do not want to export the raw partition. I have a hard disk with raw
patitions on machine 2 which should be accessible by machine 1(both of
them should be able to read and write to the raw partitions. machine 1
is a standby for machine 2: this is for oracle Real Application
Clusters).

Yes, you are right. Looks like NBD can map remote raw partitions to
local block devices. I'll have a look at how to implement it. Thanks a
lot for your input.

I haven't worked with this Kernel Device in well over 4 years, but check out the "Network Block Device" (NBD) - I originally experimented with mounting and taking forensically-sound partition images over the network with this kernel device, but I dunno if it will suit your particular need.
the NBD and ENBD (Enhanced Network Block Device) were originally intended to allow for creating a RAID across diverse objects (files, partitions, disks, etc) across a network.

The more modern alternative would be iSCSI, which can export partitions over the network Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why aren't you using ocfs2? It was designed by Oracle specifically to support RAC. Its been in the linux kernel for a while now. Anything else you do is likely to be unsupported by Oracle. At a minimum the last thing you should be doing for an Oracle install is just asking generic questions. They have lots of papers, instructions, supported configs etc. Greg -- Greg Freemyer Head of EDD Tape Extraction and Processing team Litigation Triage Solutions Specialist http://www.linkedin.com/in/gregfreemyer First 99 Days Litigation White Paper - http://www.norcrossgroup.com/forms/whitepapers/99%20Days%20whitepaper.pdf The Norcross Group The Intersection of Evidence & Technology http://www.norcrossgroup.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
