Hello All, I am real new to this Linux stuff. I just bought Suse Ver 8.2. I had not problem installing it on my new machine. I have 4 things i can't figure out. Maybe someone can help me out.. #1 - I have an 3Com Gigabit Lan card Built into my motherboard. It didn't recognize it when installed Suse 8.2. So i went to look at my motherboard Manufacturer (Asus). They had a Linux Driver for the Lan card so i download and burned it on a CD. I followed the instructions that came with the drivers but it didn't work when i tried installing it. I need to know the correct way of installing the Lan card driver. #2 - This is Similar to #1. Instead of Lan drivers it is Video Drivers. I have a GForce 4 5600 256. I downloaded the linux drivers from Nvida's website. Followed the instructions and again it didn't seem to work. #3 - I have 2 PC's. 1 with Windows 2000 and this one with Suse 8.2. I also have Cable Modem. I have the Windows 2000 Machine Connected to a Cable/Dsl Router. I need to know if i can network these 2 machines together. Also i need Suse to recognize the router and Cable Modem. #4 - I play Sony's Everquest. I am having real problems trying to install it on Suse machine. I configured the Wine. When i try to install it, it stops at the install shield. I don't know what version of Wine i have. I looked on the web to find out that i have to pay for the latest version of wine so that Everquest will run. Like i said i am a Newbie when it comes to Linux. Been a Dos/Windows user until now. f i can get this to work i would change my other machine also and stick with Suse. But my lack of knowledge may frustrate me to just go back to windows. If anyone have any good idea's or step by step instructions for a beginner like me it will be well appreciated. Thanks... =) _________________________________________________________________ Enjoy MSN 8 patented spam control and more with MSN 8 Dial-up Internet Service. a) Which motherboard? b) Did you have to compile and do an insmod?

a & b) Same as #1

a) I don't know about cable modems. Perhaps if we had a model number ?. If it is an external cable modem going to a hub and the Linux box is connected via an ethernet cable (once your network issues are resolved) to this hub then it is a no brainer to make this work. YaST makes it very easy. Also, you can use samba to export your Linux filesystem to the Windows box. To transfer files you can also use ftp.
#4 - I play Sony's Everquest. I am having real problems trying to install it on Suse machine. I configured the Wine. When i try to install it, it stops at the install shield. a) wine is free http://www.winehq.com/ . However, codeweaver's http://www.codeweavers.com/ version is not. I know nothing of games so maybe someone else can help you.

a) Going back to windows can be comforting. Sheep are comfortable. Sheep get fleeced too.

Welcome,.... I hope the gang here can help.

What card is actually on the MB? What MB model is it? What 3COM chipset is it?

Make sure you follow hese instructions: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/XFree86/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html These instructions work fine as long as you follow them exactly.

If your router is setup to provide IPs to the computers connected to it, then all you should have to do is plug in the SuSE machine to the router, and set up the ethernet card on the SuSE machine to use DHCP to get an IP. The router should assign an IP to the computer and then it shoudl be working.. as easy as that ;-)

To really get Everquest working, you will probably need to get the Transgaming verson of Wine. http://www.transgaming.com/gamepage.php?gameid=10 If you play Everquest a lot, it's worth the small amount Transgaming charges. C.

Yes you'll be better off using Transgaming's Winex. Fonts do seem to come out messed up a little, but I believe there is a way around this (have not spent the time though as it does not bother me, even have a 58 froggie Paladin that has never been played on a Windows machine). Also, if you'd be so kind, send Sony an e-mail stating that you're using Linux. I have done this, but never got a reply, but I really believe that if they see more and more people using Linux they may not have much choice but to make a naive client :). Thanks, Matt

Check out "samba" for connecting windows machines to linux. I have a WindowsXP laptop, and a SuSE 8.2 home computer. They are connected through a router, which is connected to a cable modem. Works like a dream ;)

This wine that you're talking about, is it the "TransGaming winex"? You don't really have to pay for it, unless you want it already compiled for you. You can just download the source and compile it yourself (sounds scary, it's really not).
