[SLE] Printer (or printing in general)
I have a HP 1100. I'm very happy with it, as it's performing well under Linux. But still I'm wondering if it could be better. I've installed it as a HP ljet 4, because there's no specific HP 1100 filter with SuSE. I've tried ljet 6, I think, and things went wrong (don't remember exactly what went wrong). So I wonder if a specific HP 1100 filter exists, or if there's no need for it. It works well with remote printing, as long as I rememeber to manually update lprd.hosts. Why doesn't YaST do this for me? Also, I've heard about CUPS. Why doesn't SuSE support it, as everybody that has tried it seems very impressed with it. Is it to heavy-duty for the job, or too new, or what is wrong with CUPS? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Are you reffering to the www.easysw.com ESP print drivers ? They work well , are very easy to set up , mantian and istall , altjhough on the rather plian side. They are commercial and cost $ per machine (non transferabl) and you can upgrade a licence to make it a print server as well. If you buy them make sure you get the linux pricing as the other platforms have Unix like pricing. They work well for non suported printers and are a lot easir to deal with compared to the linux printing tools. At 01:43 PM 7/12/2000 +0200, Kaare Rasmussen wrote:

I have the same printer. I'm using the "lj4dith" (I think that's it, I'm not at home just now) setup through yast. Results are excellent. experimenting could ba a bit hard: changing the if=... in /etc/printcap *and* also the name of the input filter (which is a link to apsfilter), since the name contains the driver to use. Don't forget to restart lpd afterwards.

???? lprd.hosts?? What did I miss? I knew of hosts.lpd, that contains the names of hosts that might use local printers. Of course, it could be a nice idea to manage this from yast too. But no tool in the world will add you to a remote machine. you might globaly allow printing access from everywhere on the print server, if you dare.
