Hi Des, I certainly don't mean to be going OT, but I will defend Microsoft's practices if they are falsely represented on a Linux board, MacOS board, or any other board. I'm both a Linux and Windows user, and I like both OSes. I will defend Windows to a Linux user just as I would Linux to a Windows user. If you look, while I'm not going to get into a fun game of finger pointing, I wasn't the one who originally brought up MS.

Hi Tim,
I have noticed the ongoing support you seem to have for the Winxx systems, with so many eloquent answers in support of Microsoft's policies etc.
Can I perhaps ask why you need to say all this on a Linux newsgroup - would it not be better to write to Bill himself. Goodness knows, he seems to need the support. Keep this board focused on Linux-related issues...
Best regards,
Des Aubery...

Even if Microsoft was the evil empire (I don't think it is), they wouldn't charge you another $89. Although I remember when DOS 6.22 came out and the 6.2 to 6.22 upgrade was just $9.

Jack,
I'm not a troll. I've been using Linux for 7 years and I have a 1st class degree in Comp Sci. I think I know what I'm talking about, and I also know when I *don't* know stuff, which is more than can be said for a lot of people.
What actually caused my original post was when I saw that Windows 98 (I think, maybe NT or W2K) does what we call IP masquerading. It seems that Microsoft is catching up with
NO NO NO , its another way to rob you of another 89.99 upgrading your first edetion to second edition just for a few more tweaks on somthing you allready own and paid for.
the system level power of Linux and slowly erradicating our advantages. This worries me.
If you think this is also a troll, kindly keep your mouth shut and let others make constructive comments.

Hi all, I have 2 Linux boxes on my intranet, an SuSe 6.4 and a Redhat 6.2 ... On the SuSe box, i am allowed to use the halt and reboot commands only as root/superuser, which is as it should be ( i think ) On the Redhat box, *any* user can execute these commands after entering his/her password .... how can i control this ? There's another problem, it usually reboots after the 1st halt command and powers off only at the second attempt .............is this normal ? Can this be rectified ? PS I am asking these questions on this List, only because the SMART Redhat-list has unsubscribed me for some unknown reason ( i am still working this out with their Listmaster )... yes it should. What are the permissions on the files involved? Are they SERSUID ?

I've seen that the use of these commands switches to singel mode on some systems. For fun try "init 0" for halt or "init 6" for reboot. shutdown and halt call this in the end, but with further options and checking from their scripts.
