[opensuse] No boot after upgrade to 11.0
When I attempt to boot from harddisk, I get the error Grub loading Stage 1.5 Grub loading, please wait... It never goes any further. I have tried system repair>>reload grub bootloader to no avail. Any ideas appreciated. Ed Harrison -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It never goes any further. Stage 1.5 IIRC is the stage it reads the file system of the boot device. If so, it may be fs corruption causing it not to be able to read its files in /boot/grub and the kernel and initrd in /boot. If

xfs_check shows no inconsistencies. xfs_repair -n shows no proposed changes to the partition. Ed -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You may not like this but it is possible that your HD is on the way out or is already gone. I had the same thing only a couple of weeks or so ago on one of my test drives. Had to use the manufacturer's (Seagate/Maxtor) setup disc to check the HD out and it came up with some bad sectors. Not a problem, I thought, the setup disc should repair them as it keeps asking if it should repair the sectors. But nah-nah, not a sausage- the errors were still there. So, a low level format was in order but even this did not repair the sectors. openSUSE was happy to install on it but when it came to the booting part the dreaded error that you are getting came up again and again. I retired the 80GB HD to become a paper-weight. The least you could do at the moment is to check the HD out as I did to see if the manufacturer's disc reveals anything. Oh, the other weird thing which was happening with my HD was that I could boot into the installed OS (v11.0 RC1) using the 10.3 DVD (with Boot Installed System facility - now removed from 11.0 :-( ) and it all worked fine but I could not boot normally - got the grub error. The booting using the 10.3 DVD really threw me until I used the mfgr's disc to check out the HD. No. I updated my 10.3 to 11.0 yesterday and it happened the very same thing to me. My hard disk was completely right: it was the before gfxboot app which was "disappointed" the system. I deleted and I got success at last. But this not before eight or nine hours working and trying to resolve the question. I must confess I was just about to give up SuSE. I find some strange things in update to 11.0, but as my English is so poor as Twain's character, I will not say here. Finally, as I've said, after nearly nine hours trying SuSE 11.0 to recognize my DVD, rebooting on and on, I got it installed and booted. Moreover, OpenSuSE (I'm still naming this way, sorry, it's so long doing so) is good. Only these two or three issues, but a great version. Bye, and thank you. Hudibras.

Well, I am not up to 9 hours, but almost. What about gfxboot app did you delete? Thanks in advance. Ed -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
