Pathetic Konqueror hangs when I type in a URL
Hi: I have Suse 9.1 with KDE/Konqueror 3.2.1. If I type in a ftp://any.some.url into the URL bar, Konqueror hangs. Anyone ever seen something so pathetic as this? -- Good day! ________________________________________ Christopher R. As pathetic as this trollish post? Well... yeah. You're running an obsolete
version of SUSE. You haven't described the hardware platform you're running
it on, nor have you indicated if the system was patched correctly up to the
time that support for 9.1 was discontinued. And your sole question is *not*
how to correct the situation (so you obviously don't want to correct it) but
instead is used to convey an insult to this list. I seem to recall you doing
the same thing here a year or two ago. Get a life, will ya?

The proxy settings weren't working with my network. Still not good that the program just hangs indefinitely in this situation. -- Good day! ________________________________________ Christopher R. And what is it supposed to do, ignore the fact that the system still hasn't returned an error that the proxy is not available? What sort of timeout do you feel is appropriate? "Settings weren't working"... sounds to me like a euphemism for a sysadmin finger-f***.

What it is supposed to do is to allow one to perform some sort of action to stop it from continuing to try accessing the proxy server. Having the "Stop" button functional would be sufficient. It need not be an automatic timeout, for I also have little respect for excessive attempts at intelligent behavior on the part of machines. Instead it hung in a condition entirely unresponsive to any further user input, so I had to kill it. This is not a sysadmin screwup, but a poor software design. I did this a few other times thinking there was some bug in the URL entry field so trying different URLs before discovering that it was the proxy problem. Oh, but it didn't help that it would hang *before* I even pressed the "Enter" key. It would hang as soon as I had typed ftp:// <-- the second slash would make it hang. Hence, my suspicion that it was at the user interface rather than network level. What finally made me peeved was that my whole desktop froze on another occasion while typing in the URL. In this case I had to kill X. -- Good day! ________________________________________ Christopher R. That happened to me recently. I plugged my Linux box into the network at my workplace, and entered the automatic proxy configuration url into Firefox. It worked fine. Next I entered the same proxy url into Konqueror. It just froze with no indication of what was wrong. I asked our network admin, and he just said that Konqueror is known not to work with our proxy, but he did not explain why. If you want pathetic, consider the version of Lotus Word Pro that I bought many years ago. You had to install it to obtain the installation instructions. Or the Microsoft Word spellchecker (In Australia at least) that insisted "Okalahoma" was correct. I think this applied from Word 97 at least to Word 2000, I have not used Word for some years now. Or people who can't open text file attachments. Andy Goss
