weird chit w/ 7.1 install
******* Where does a newborn go from here? The Net is Vast, and Infinate...******** Gang, anyone have this problem ? Install 2.2 or 2.2 and 2.4 in the same installation , (as in feeding the cds in to get "both" kernals in one fell swoop ) INStall goes just fine ( thank you ) BUT.. when you try to add users or change the root password, or any other of the normal things one does setting up a box, you get "error opening password file or error opening ypasswords ( not sure of the spelling on the last one , it could be yppassowrs, it "appears" to be all one word ) So far the only thing I haven't tried is an install w/ just 2.4 ... but it seems strange, and I haven't had it in the past w/ 7.0 I'm not gettting teh "weird firewall" probs others have reported , firewall is started and seems to be running okay ( can't very well poke at it when I can't even get root recognised! It has had no changes made so it must be the default configuration <g> My video card is setup okay ( and I haven't even tried the 3d support, so that shouldn't cause any of this stuff. , it likes my modem ( I can get to the net , tho I havne't been able to have root get a netscape up and running ) I thought for my third trick today I might just install 2.4 by it's lonesome and see if that is the problem, or perhaps try and install over an already installed 7.0 ???? It is getting to be a bit of a pita , as the only solution ( so far) is to use Partition Magic 6 and delete the linux partitions , which reduces me to a windows only box ( bleah!) or reinstall 7.0 set it up and then install on top of it?? That doesn't sound very inviting... tho IF it's the only solution ??? is there a hiddes configuration file somewhere ? cause the first time I did a clean install , it came up aces, no problems w/ it, I had 3d support as Ben suggested automagically... it just used the opengl stuff w/ no "persuesion" at all <g> so I'm sort of lost . I've read the big 600 page book a couple of times thru this past weekend trying to figure out where the poblem might be, but I have to have MUST have at least one fully multiuser box immediately ( I wont be going home until I have one <sigh>) TIA j afterthought--- When cryptography is outlawed, bayl bhgynjf jvyy unir cevinpl

Looks like you messed up with NIS staff. When doing just default installation NIS shouldn't be installed. -Kastus
