Could somebody give me some help in recognizing a USB serial connection. I am using 9.1 and KDE 3.3. Case. I have a camera which still has to be connected via a serial connection. As I have problems with my second serial port (cable or irq) I thought it would be a nice idea to use a usb serial cable. Connecting my camera and switching it on did nothing which was no big surprise because hotplugged devices are not any more found in the (former) "My computer " button but at media there is nothing new either. How can I activate the new usb attached device and where should I find it hotplugged?

here lsusb says mine is "prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port" and modules usbserial and pl2303 loaded. I haven't tried it hotplugged, so if that doesn't work, try booting with it plugged and see if it works. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

Dear Sid. Thanks for the info. Did a restart and have since then following info with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 006: ID 08dd:8001 Billionton Systems, Inc. Bus 001 Device 005: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port Bus 001 Device 004: ID 03eb:3301 Atmel Corp. 4-port Hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 No further info. I know that I have four way hub where my card reader and the serial cable are connected to. Think the hub is the Atmel, The Billionton is the cardreader so that leaves the serial cable also as Prolific Techn. Do not get any information that modules usbserial and pl2303 are loaded. Did I miss something? usbmodules gave PL2303 though. And where and how to mount them?
Just my 2 cents worth. We have found that the usb->serial doesn't work for the low level communication stuff we do here. You might be ok with a camera, however, I would recommend and actual serial port on an add-on card. Then it should just show up in /dev/.... As a first try, "modprobe usbserial" then "modprobe pl2303". In /etc/modprobe.conf I have:- install char-major-188 /bin/true alias char-major-188 usbserial The device is /dev/ttyUSB0. I noticed in the next post, there is mention it doesn't work for him, but I've used it as a serial console, boot option console=ttyS0 on the booting machine and kermit on the laptop on ttyUSB0 to capture Oops on kernel.org kernels for sending to the developers. I haven't got my inittab set up for normal serial console and probably not my kernel, but next build I shall make sure it's set up so I can connect with kermit, minicom or gtkterm.
