USB Card Recommendations
Hello, everyone. I am planning to add a USB card to my old IBM PC Server 704 in order to hook up a new printer to it. Ideally, I would like a card with 4 or more ports instead of just two. Does anyone have any suggestions for cards available in the US that will work with SuSE 8.1 Pro ? I have been looking at Belkin, Adaptec, SIIG, both USB1.1 and USB2. None of them seem to explicitly say "Works with Linux", and I'd rather buy one that works first time, instead of trying a few that don't and finally finding a good one. I'm also mulling over the combo cards with USB2 and Firewire, even though I don't have any USB2 or firewire devices right now. Again, it comes down to a compatibility issue. If the cards will work fine, it might be worth a few extra dollars now just in case I do get any of these faster devices in the future. I checked the linux-usb site, and they seemed to infer that all OHCI/UHCI (USB1.1) and EHCI (USB2) drivers are in kernels 2.4.19 and above, although the USB2 driver is still marked experimental. So, do any of you have great success stories, or tales of woe, with any particular products that would fit the bill ? Thanks, Stuart.

<snip> Based in the UK, I am not sure if this hardware is available in US. The Freecom external harddrive with a USB2 interface came with a USB2 card using a NEC chip. The card has two ports. Looks very similar to the Beklin card which also has a NEC chip. The card was slotted into a spare PCI slot, hooked the drive and all was well. The hardware scan and hotplug packages which are installed by default shoudl be running to detect the nw hardware. Use the command "fdisk -l" for information on what the devices are cllaed if they are storage devices. Then use the mount command to access the device. I do not have experience of other usb devices. As regards firewire, follow the same procedure. However, the pc here does not always recognise the drive. After some research, the "boot.local" fiel had to be modified to load some modules. After this, the drive worked. Let me know if you want details of modifications. LW99. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? ---------------------------- Hi Stuart, I have successfully installed and used the Belken USB 2.0 card without problems. It was being used under a 2.4.18 kernel by the way, but I did upgrade the user to 2.4.19 for the best compatiblity and drivers. It uses the OHCI/EHCI standards and the user has used a USB2 scanner, card reader & external cdrw on the card. It contains 4 external and 1 internal USB2 connectors. I highly recommend it! I have an old AMI motherboard, and when I tried a USB card it didn't work. I don't know who made the card. Old MB's with old BIOS's may never work with usb cards. Be warned. --doug At 21:25 03/02/2003 -0500, PL O'Smith wrote:
