re(SLE) new to linux - problems getting started
Hi, many thanks for the replies to my email about my booting difficulties. they pointed me in the right direction for solving the problem - i told my bios to 'auto configurewith optimal settings', then just had to enable usb to make it all work! I can now boot to linux via the MBR, and have got as far as configuring my internet connection. problem - the screen image does not fill the monitor screen - there is a black border several cms wide all the way round. my video card is a SiS AGP SVGA 4096. how can i fix this? thanks again, dave chapman, stroud, uk.

i would say you should adjust your monitor, i.e. the horizontal & vertical size..... its normal that if you use a video mode for that your monitor hasnt been configured before, you have to adjust it...... greets, chris -- visit me at http://mamalala.de

hi dave, Hi Christian, many thanks for your email. i am not sure this is the answer as the monitor works well with windows, without any adjustment, and has done for several years. i have to keep windows for the time being as i have several applications that are not supported in linux - particularly my Creative web-cam go plus. thanks again, dave chapman, stroud uk.

re dave, well, if you have a different frequency as under windows (and im sure you have under x) than you need to adjust your monitor again. same applies if you change the refresh rate for example under windows. try it ! chris Am Sonntag, 10. Juni 2001 18:58 schrieb sunbeams:

Yes, to be clear, Christian is not suggesting that you adjust the
actual monitor, which are fixed, but the settings for X. This should
be done through sax2 (type sax2 as root) or xf86config if necessary.
You can get there through YaST2.

No, I think he means adjust the monitor, just like it says. Modern monitors have memory settings. If you set your monitor for whatever set of frequencies MSWin puts out, it should remember them, even after you set up the proper display for your Linux frequencies. And it should remember those, too. Then both OS's should be OK. If I am in error, Christian will please correct me.
This is a laptop, right? There have been a few mail on this list about that very subject lately. Something about vga=ask in lilo.conf, I think (I don't have a laptop, so I've never actually had to do this). Search the list archive for the details.
