Parenthetically, one subscriber suggested xmule, which I used briefly. It decided, one day, that it wasn't going to download the server list. I fed it a single server & it then managed to aquire several more, but not nearly what is on the default list.
That sounds like the behaviour of an old version of xMule. I use 1.7.2 (via apt) and it works fine. I've had it crash maybe twice in 3 months when trying to add a new file for download. Otherwise it's stable and had no problems at all with keeping the list of servers upto date and downloading files at decent speeds. C.

C. Well... I d/l xmule-1.7.4c and attempted './compile && make' according to instructions. After lots of console output it boiled down to the following...

Did you try doing the ./compile on it's own? Looks to me like you are missing something.... take a look at the end of the config.log file This should tell you what's actually missing. Probably some prerequisite library is needed for the compile.... You could always try this instead.... http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/xmule/ xmule-1.7.2-1.i586-suse9.0.rpm?download C.

Make sure you have gtk-devel installed, and make sure you have /opt/gnome/bin in your $PATH when you run configure. Test from the command line by running "gtk-config --cflags" to see if everything is installed correctly

If you mean is it supposed to be blank, then the answer is no. It's supposed to look like -I/opt/gnome/include/gtk-1.2 -I/opt/gnome/include/glib-1.2 -I/opt/gnome/lib/glib/include -I/usr/X11R6/include
