How to copy DVD-RW to a DVD-R on SUSE Linux?
Hi, How can I copy a DVD-RW to a DVD-R with Linux software? The DVD-RW was recorded by a DVD recorder (Sony RDR-GX210 in my case) from TV or a camcoder so it doesn't use any encryption. Recipes on the Internet mostly refer to Windows software. To copy a DVD-R created by the DVD recorder, the ISO image can be copied: 1) finalize the DVD-R in the DVD recorder 2) dd if=/dev/dvd of=dvd.iso 3) growisofs -speed=4 -Z /dev/dvd=dvd.iso This DVD can be viewed by both the PC (kaffeine, mplayer, ...) and by the DVD recorder. But if I apply the same recipe to a DVD-RW, the resulting DVD-R cannot be played by the DVD recorder. What is it good for? For instance the "ShowView" times include at least several minutes of advertisement before and after a TV program. It's easy to remove those parts on the DVD-RW by the DVD recorder. DVD-R media are more durable and cheaper and thus it would be nice to copy the content of DVD-RW to DVD-R and reuse the DVD-RW for recording. -- A.M.

I do not know if your recorder does not make some different structure for rewritable media, so it is easy later for it to edit the content. Can you play this RW DVD in a normal standalone DVD player right out of the box? If this is so, then the structure of the files is well prepared, and you can just copy the whole file structure to another disk. Use k3b for this. Copy the file content of the DVD-RW disk to your HDD, and then just burn this file structure to DVD-R. It should be something like only one folder in the root - VIDEO_TS, and inside there should be all VOB files, etc. If your DVD-R has the same file structure, it will play nicely in standalone DVD players. It seems it does. Actually, the RDR-GX210 can format DVD-RW media in two ways: -RW VR and -RW Video. Only the -RW VR supports editing (A-B erase). The directory structure is (only 1 title is present): /media/dvd> tree . `-- DVD_RTAV |-- VR_MANGR.BUP |-- VR_MOVIE.VRO `-- VR_MANGR.IFO MPlayer and other tools do not see a DVD disc: /media/dvd> mplayer dvd://1 ... Playing dvd://1. Reading disc structure, please wait... libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO. Can't open VMG info! Exiting... (End of file) But MPlayer can play the VR_MOVIE.VRO file which is identified as:: MPEG-PS file format detected. VIDEO: MPEG2 720x576 (aspect 2) 25.000 fps 4505.6 kbps (563.2 kbyte/s) ========================================================================== Opening audio decoder: [liba52] AC3 decoding with liba52 Using SSE optimized IMDCT transform AC3: 2.0 (stereo) 48000 Hz 256.0 kbit/s ... The directory structure of a DVD-R created by the RDR-GX210 is different, for example: /media/dvd> tree -a . `-- video_ts |-- video_ts.bup |-- video_ts.ifo |-- video_ts.vob |-- vts_01_0.bup |-- vts_01_0.ifo |-- vts_01_1.vob |-- vts_01_2.vob `-- vts_01_3.vob It seems that a more sophisticated tool than "dd" is needed in this case. -- A.M.

Actually, dd should work with media, prepared for Video, i.e. VIDEO_TS/more .vobs :) If it does not, just create a new .iso with growisofs, but using as a source the directory structure. .VRO structure will not play in normal players, but if mplayer plays it, then it most probably is mpeg2 program stream, and using tools like dvdauthor you should be able to prepare video dvd from it.
