Suse Linux 8.1 and onboard Promise Fasttrak100 Raid controller
Hi, I am experiencing some problems getting a Raid Array running and hope someone has an idea of how to fix this. My system configuration is: - Suse Linux 8.1, SMP-Kernel (2 Athlon MP) - onboard Promise FastTrak100 (20276) - 2 brandnew WD 120GB ATA drives - mirrored Array with the 2 disks I searched the internet and Linux mailing lists, however none of the tips worked for me. What I did so far: Promise and Suse have no driver support for the raid controller. There is a driver, which is unfortunately only working for the older kernel in Suse Linux 8.0. Therefore I followed the suggestions in http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2003-Jan/0868.html that is: downloading a source from vosberg.be and compiling the promise module on a seperate Linux partition. When starting the installation I choose manual and load in the newly compiled module. I partitioned only under the detected Raid (/dev/sda) and not under the disks (/dev/hde + /dev/hdg). However, booting again, the Promise Bios shows that the Raid status is critical. Booting the newly installed systems fails as well as trying to install again. When mirroring the disks with the FastTrak module I am able to start again ... but I do not come over the stage described above. In the installation guide in mailing lists it is said that one should install on /dev/ataraid/d0. Maybe this is causing the problem? I do not see any ataraid (only hde, hdg, sda) and if it is possible to create it I do not know how. I would be grateful for any help as I am trying it for a week now and I am already thinking of throwing it away and using the IDE controller instead with a good backup utility. Oh, and by the way: everything is working fine under WinXP. Best regards, Thomas
