RE: [SLE] Linux compatible organizer
Could somebody please recommend any good pocket size organizer with
I do have to agree with most of the assessment of the Sharp Zareus. I
have one as well, and have it synched to email, address book, file
synchronization isquick even setting it up to work with Windows XP. I
don't have all the cards yet but the thing works wonders for alot of
things. I have had no problems sending data via IR to other systems
(palm OS, Windows CE) on different hand helds. I have it synced through
my local network at the office and SSH to my servers for quick fixes
incase a service stops. It is really nice.

keyboard and possibility to natively synchronize it with Linux.
In addition to the Palm OS there is also the option to get a linux PDA from sharp. Currently available is the version 5500. It has a built in keyboard as well as "normal" alphabet characters, and Normal "numbers " if you wish to do the handwriting way of input.. and , as if that weren't enough , there is also the sort of "soft keyboard" that is basically a "picture" of a keyboard where you use the stylus to select the characters you wish to use. You *should* be able to get a pretty good price on these 8oz "computers" Nearlly everything you can do w/ , say an old PII box can be done w/ this hand held item, there are also Wireless adapter cards, it takes compact flash , as WELL as the SD, and similar Sandisck "secure" digital cards or Multimedia cards , etc. Tho I must say , I find the Sd cards to be very much slower to access and run a program from the "added" Drive space ... It is Multimeda capable as well, tho for the 5500 you will need a pair of earphones, or perhaps small speakers . The newer version ( out in Japan, not yet available in the States , in theory , "next quarter" , but the price for that will be back to the $400 price, plus the nifty little attachments. I.e. the Wireless card, the phone attachment , should you desire to have that sort of access, thru the Sharp Zaurus Wireless network. There is also an ethernet card ( goes into the CF slot ) Qtopia 1.6.x is a pretty reliable tho sometimes cranky interface between the handheld and your desktop box. I use an ethernet card to surf the net when I'm home.. I've also used the wireless "modem" type thing. When I go out in our present weather ( 84F during the day, about 73 at nigh) But the Wireless ( Netgeer MA701 ) Will suck the life out of your batteries in an astonishingly short time. This is apparently true no matter the type/brand of card one gets, so , the ethernet card is more practical for doing much of anything < OR.. a very long extension cord, to power the Zaurus and, one hopes, keep up w/ the Wireless card. You will also want to get some CF cards, there are now a few companies supplying the 1gig size, and there was an announcement around the time of E3 of 1.5, 2, and 3 gig cards.. pricey, but that means, the 500meg, and one gig cards will be around $250 or so once the end user version of those really BIg ( 3 gigs, that is as big as my first purpose built home computer hard drive , whiew ! ) Unfortunately the Sandisk is only up to 250 MEG and those are pretty scarce. AS you can tell , I like the thing , a lot. I can carry my 8oz item , and plug into any computer that allows a root login... All the usual Linux commands are built in , and you CAN also interface w/ the thing by commandline , should that be your desire <G> THo you WILL have to install a shell interface ( Bash and a few others are actually built in as well, but getting to them requires installing a FREE program that then provides you w/ the shell. There are lots of "Free" programs out there , and a few commercially developed apps, that are a really good replacement for the somewhat clunky Sharp PIM features. Which , not too surprisingly are built on the PIM apps that sharp has used forever, in their electronic datebooks. THat is the only similarity tho. THE 5500 is much faster and is capable of doing a heck of a lot more, even web surfing, playing divxed "movies" ( they need to fit on the CF cards, and so far there have been several of the current goup of users who have managed to get a dvd transferred to a CF card and have been happy w/ the result. I dunno about that , after all we are still talking about a 2.5 in X 3.5in screen ( size roughly guesstimated from memory, as I don't have the thing handy ... ) Still it is not only an mp3 player as well as mpeg player it also plays Ogg files. Attach a pair of Bose headphones to it , plonk in a .5gig or 1 gig cf card and you can probably make it all the way cross country on one set of batteries, and the Combination of earphones and the player will make you feel much better at the end of your trip, blocking out the noise that airplanes make these days is not an idea so much as a necessity if you are expected to be awake and coherent on your arrival in whatever locale you fetch up in.
