I've been using SuSE 7.2 Pro (kernel 2.4.4) with XFree86 4.0.3 for a couple of months with no problems. All of a sudden, I'm getting freezeups with X startups: the .X.err log shows the following message: WARNING: KDE detected X Error: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter) 9 Major opcode: 14. I'm using a AMD K6-2/350, 128MB RAM, ATI Expert98 8MB RAM, FIC PA2013 montherboard. There has been a problem with the sound card, a Turtle Beach/Voyetra Daytona card, but I've been able to ignore it since installation -- Thanks, Brian Beaver DMEC

In my old 7.2 setup I was having that problem with root. I soved it by copying my X-xxxx files from my user account to root's home and changing ownership to root. Then I made a copy of them in a subdir, and would copy them to root's home before I did startx. I was to lazy to redo SaX2. Jerry
I have been a bit over ambitious and now cannot get any window manager to load. I can get as far as the X login screen and it appears to load but just returns to it. If I then run 'startx' it goes through the same procedure. The last 2 lines when it returns are:- /root/.xinitrc: usr/X11R6/bin/RunWM: No such file or directory /root/.xinitrc: exec: /usr/X11R6/bin/RunWM: cannot execute: No such file or directory This all happened after I installed AfterStep and then uninstalled it because had taken over the machine. Probably shouldn't have, but that is history. have tried export WINDOWMANAGER=/usr/X11R6/bin/startkde but no effect. Have tried suewm, again nothing. Can anyone help please, or am I looking at a re install. Regards, David
Try switching to console 1 on F1 to see your error messages. It may be a
permissions problem. Does it do that for all users? If not, do a ls -l of
your home dir and see if root owns any files or dirs there. If so, try
chown -R username /home/username/.

Thanks - I tried that but no go. Nothing happened with chown - not sure what that does. All I can get is the xserver login screen, so the x part works. It tries to load but gets thrown back to the login. Just noticed the blue console screen, and that has:_ linux kdm[1160]: extra arguments on command line linux /usr/sbin/gpm[1156]: error in protocol Any ideas - it is looking like a re install at the moment. Did you try changing .xinitrc back to what it was before you installed that RedHat thing. i.e. remove the runwm line, and put in exec $WINDOWMANAGER regards Anders On Friday 16 November 2001 01:41, David wrote:

Thanks Anders, unfortunately doesn't make any difference. I think it is time for the FBH. It is going to be quicker to re install than to sort this Regards, David On Fri, 16 Nov 2001 01:58:30 +0100, Anders Johansson wrote:

Check ~/.xsession-errors to see if you had an error output.

I have managed to corrupt the Window managers in Linux. I have received a lot of suggestions here, but nothing has been achieved. The quickest way now is to just re install, but first I want to know which files to save to just restore my network again. I don't want to do a backup since that might include the corrupt files Regards, David
