Can anyone tell me how to properly configure this board? Can it be done via sax2? If so which board type are you using?

I think the problem isn't with the card, assuming that, apart from the resolution, it's working fine. I have found sax/sax2 to be absolutely crap with detecting and handling monitors. It detects my LG 55V correctly by name, but it gets the scanrates wrong. So I type it in, but still after sax2 has finished it's business, the scanrates entered into the XF86Config file (and so also the modelines) are incorrect again. And never twice the same. Also, trying to get the resolutions and refresh rates that I know my monitor can do, I tried specifying a larger monitor, to fool XFree (my screen switches off if you feed it a too high mode, so no chance of damaging it). The only one that did work was one of the bigger LG - on every single other monit I've tried, Sax2 gives me only one resolution - 640x480 @ 60hz. This is rubbish, really. I've found the following to help: 1. Check the Horizontal and Vertical scanrates in your XF86Config file and correct them if necessary. Add the desired resolutions, if they're not in there. 2. If this doesn't work, uncomment the "modes" line and section in XF86Config. For the most part X can work out the correct modelines by itself. Hans, Thanks for the info. Your experience in relation to sax/sax2 sounds like mine. I have pretty much ruled out the video card config and started looking at the monitor config. Sax2, even when I feed it a Hitachi .inf file, still gives me bogus garbage in the monitor settings. It may be my lack of knowledge in Linux but it looks like you had similar experiences. I will try this tomorrow when I get back to my machine. If it works I will post it. D.C. H du Plooy wrote:

Couple of problems from your test config. One, it's for XF86 3.x, the Radeon's are only supported in the XF86 4.x and higher. Make sure you have XF86 4.x installed. Try starting sax with this command "sax2 -m 0=ati" or "sax2 -m 0=radeon", this will start SaX2 off already using the right driver, then you can adjust the settings. Don

SaX uses the VGA drivers from 3.x to run on, then sets up and starts 4.x if
your card is supported. I just wanted to make sure you had 4.x installed.
Try starting sax with the command I mentioned "sax2 -m 0=radeon" or "sax2 -m
0=ati". This will start sax and it will load the Radeon drivers, then you
can use it to configure your card and monitor.
I'll show you what the XF86Config looks like for my Radeon 8500 so you can
see the differences in what you had.

I don't know for sure what happened, but evidently something that I had done in the past few days was preventing my XF86Config from working properly. I was unable whatsoever to get 1600x1200 resolution no matter what I tried. I finally went back and re-installed the original XF86 packages from the SuSE 8.0 DVD and then re-applied the patches/updates. I now have 1600x1200 resolution. :-) SO it appears that what ever was preventing the configuration of XF86Config from taking place was eleminated during the re-install. I still have one oddity, but I am not worried about it. My understanding is that the Modes that are listed in the config file give the order in which the resolution changes when you press either CTRL_ALT_+ or CTRL_ALT_-. Therefore if mine is set as: DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "640x480" EndSubSection Then it would come up as 1600x1200 and then shift to 1280x1024 when I press CTRL_ALT_- This does not happen on mine. I don't know why but it goes to something like 640x480 but only a portion of the screen is visible and it is in some kind of virtual screen mode (scrolling screen). I am happy to get 1600x1200 working :-D so I am not concerned about this fluke but if any of you have an idea why this is happening, please let me know. Thanks for all the help, Darrell Cormier Darrell Cormier wrote:

I've found the following to help:
1. Check the Horizontal and Vertical scanrates in your XF86Config file and correct them if necessary. Add the desired resolutions, if they're not in there.
2. If this doesn't work, uncomment the "modes" line and section in XF86Config. For the most part X can work out the correct modelines by itself.

I don't know if this makes any difference but this is the Sax2 version info: SaX2 version 4.3 - CVS Release: 1.30 2002/02/28
thx, Darrell
That may be but your own posting said this:::
------------------------------------------------------------------------ # generic XFree86 3.x configuration file <<<<<<<<---------------

You have to see which version of Xfree87 you are actually running. Take a look at the first line in /var/log/XFree86.99.log (or the most recient Xfree86 log in that directory). -- _________________________________________________ No I Don't Yahoo!
