My system is:
300MHz PII, ASUS Motherboard, 10Gb IDE drive, 256Mb RAM - it also has Windows95 on a 2Mb SCSI drive via an Adaptec 2940.
I've previously had SuSE 5.3, 6.0, 6.1, 6.3 on this machine. Rather than simply upgrading, I did a fresh install of SuSE 7.0 Professional using Yast-1. Everything went fine until I attempted to reboot after removing the boot CD at the end of the installation. I got the LILO prompt as usual, and after typing Linux got the normal Loading Linux message followed by 14 periods (.). Then the cursor flipped to a new line and froze. Nothing happened at all.
I can boot the installed version from the boot floppy or CD, but it doesn't seem to want to boot on its own, and I can't seen any error mesages in any of the logs (at least in the usual ones). It's almost as if the machine isn't uncompressing the kernel for some reason.
To make sure that I hadn't screwed up the hardware or anything, I did a complete re-install of 6.3 using as near as possible the same settings as with the 7.0 installation. Works like a dream.
Does anyone have any ideas? I've been beating my head on this one for a few days now without any joy.
Thanks,
Adrian

My guess, the kernel is too big. What kind of kernel did you install? -Kastus

I don't think this is the problem. I've tried several of the kernels, my first choice was the Pentium optimized one. In addition, I'm not sure why there should be such a large increase in kernel size between versions if this were the case. In addition, I can boot the installed distribution from the floppy/CD. So in conclusion, I still cannot boot 7.0 from the hard drive, it hangs without any error messages (at least that I can see) after saying that it's loading the kernel and before uncompressing the kernel. SuSE 6.3 works like a charm and I do nothing different between the two installations (yes I'm anal and write down everything I do). In addition, I e-mailed suse-support in the middle of last week about this and, apart from their automated response, have not heard a whisper form them. Adrian

Are you sure that lilo was run during the install to write the updated MBR? Is *all* of the boot partition below track 1024 otherwise clueless...
