Message-ID: <6335CBB2F69AD411AD3100D0B7BA38E370E204@CORPUSMX2> From: Cleary_Mike@emc.com Date: Wed, 29 Nov 2000 11:12:23 -0500 Subject: KDE2 won't start....or stop... {SuSE 6.4, kernel 2.2.14, Xfree86 4.01} Last night I installed KDE2 for SuSE 6.4 using the rpms from the SuSE web site. I installed them individually using kpackage and experienced no apparent problems (except a minor conflict w/ qtdevel2 & a previous version of qtdevel which is not needed anyway). So, I logged out & tried "startx kde2". This did not work which kinda surprised me since it used to work when I had tried one of the KDE2 beta versions (build 94 I believe). BTW, I had already uninstalled the beta version. So next I tried "WINDOWMANAGER=KDE2 startx", and this did not work either. Please note that this method apparently no longer works for other windowmanagers either ( i.e. for starting gnome). I don't know why, because the last time I tried it, it worked just fine. Anyway, what happens when I try this is that I end up with a uniformly gray screen, with the large 'X' mouse cursor in the middle. As it turns out I find that I am in a TWM session. ????? I started an xterm (in TWM) and just on a whim one time I typed in "kde2" in the xterm. Much to my surprise, KDE2 started. It looked a little funky, but everything I tried seemed to work. It even kept most of my kde1 icons, and played the kde1 sounds I had set up, - even on startup! However, I can't log out of KDE2. The only way I can get it to shut down is to kill X. I remember reading on this list that it could take a while for KDE2 to shut down, so I tried waiting for about 10 minutes once (after choosing "logout"). It never shut down. Anway, this is really bizarre behavior and it obviously isn't working the way it should. Obviously I've got something screwed up somewhere, but I don't know where. Can anyone shed a little light on all this mess? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!! {By the way, in case you're wondering, I don't use the the drop-down menu on the graphical login screen, because the only thing that will start from the graphical login drop-down menu is kde. It's been that way ever since I installed Xfree86 4.01. I didn't really care because I always use the console login anyway.} <p>Thanks!, Mike -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael Cleary UNIX Qualification and Commands Data General, a Division of EMC2 62 T.W.
