FW: [SLE] Still with Grub Problems
Dear All,
Could someone please tell and help me to solve this problem? Actually I have got two hard-disks of where suse is installed on master and windows on slave.
It was previously the opposite, I mean the windows on master and suse on slave, but after I reconferred the setting in shifting the jumper in order to have suse on master and windows on slave. After this operation I had several problems concerning the mdr and grub configuration, and than I decided to reinstall everything and now I still get the problem with starting. So when I turn on my pc the word GRUB displays and stops. Here is the last modification of the menu.lst that I have tried too

Either boot off the rescue disk to mount your partition or however you got onto it. Then run grub. Do a "root (hd0,2)". Then do a "setup (hd0)". Then "quit" and reboot. I cannot believe the number of problems you have for a simple thing! :-) But it's nice to see you're still bravely hanging on with persistence and patience. 1. Disconnect the Linux disk. See if Windows boots. If it doesn't, boot the Windows CD, repair mode, "fixmbr" 2. Connect the Linux disk, disconnect the Windows disk. Can you boot Linux? If not, boot with CD1, rescue mode. mount /dev/hda3 /mnt # if you have your root filesystem on hda3 chroot /mnt grub-install (hd0) exit reboot 3. Reconnect the Windows disk Now you should be able to boot Windows from this section: title windows map (hd0) (hd1) map (hd1) (hd0) rootnoverify (hd0,0) # also try just (hd0) makeactive chainloader +1
Thanks a lot for your reply. I followed the way as you described below. But I'm getting now the error as follow: -------- GRUB Loading stage1.5.
GRUB loading, please wait ... Error 17 This is a file system recognition error -- the partition exists, but GRUB cannot recognize the file system type. Stage 1 just loads a location on a partition, and knows nothing about file system types. There are several stage 1.5 files, one for each file system type that Linux can boot from, and one of these must be copied into the MBR along with the stage 1 stuff. Normally grub's install process should figure
Yahiaoui, A. wrote: this out by itself, but in your case for some reason it has not. Make sure that all the files /usr/lib/grub/*stage* are copied into /boot/grub (except you do not need the stage2_eltorito and stage2.netboot files since you are booting off a hard drive), and then (if necessary) reinstall grub again as Brad suggested in his reply to your first post. If this does not work, or if the files are already in /boot/grub, then we will have to give the grub setup a little more information to force it to install the proper stage 1.5 file. If you wish to understand more about how grub works and if you have access to another system with the grub rpm installed on it, run 'info grub' from a console prompt and just peek around the info menu lists. Particularly important to installling grub are "install" and "setup" -- these are in the grub info under "Commands" then "Commandline and menu entry commands".
