Hi all,
My name is Shane Broomhall from Australia. I am considering my future direction in the computer industry. I have decided to get serious and learn a version of Linux. I am already familiar with Unix (Solaris). It is a toss up between Red Hat and SUSE. I have been happier with SUSE when it installs on my laptops. I have had a look through the documentation that comes on the CD. I am finding myself more impressed with SUSE over Red hat.
Several problems I have are:
SUSE does not have a presence in Australia, Red Hat does. There are dozens of Red Hat books and guides, very few on SUSE.
I would appreciate it if some of you would be able to give me a comparison of the 2 flavours, on the understanding that I am already leaning towards SUSE. I am planning offer installations and support as a part of my business, but only once I know the product.
I would be particularly interested in hearing of how widely is SUSE used in the business world, What kind of companies, and of any known big unsolvable problems with SUSE or Red Hat.
I am also interested in finding any specific SUSE documentation that may be hidden out there.
Thanks in advance

The only thing I would disagree with is the documentation. Since I speak German, it's no problem, but some of the translation needs to be a bit more thorough on the SuSE stuff. other than that, I go SuSE all the way. Yes, I am using Windoze right now, but there is a reason.
There is?
Why do I feel like I have to justify my use of Windoze, anyways.
Who said you needed to justify it? Seems like you just volunteered it right up. Greg http://www.2fortheroad.net

Shane, Here are a few points I can think of. I used RedHat a few years back, but have been using SuSE for quite a while now.
- SuSE 6.4 or 7.0 Pro: 4th biggest seller in US, THE best seller in Europe (IIRC), uses RPM from RedHat, has great admin tools, includes ReiserFS, 1,500 apps on CD and DVD, big KDE supporter (and desktop defaults to KDE), great documentation.
-RedHat: THE biggest Linux distro in THE biggest Linux market (US, IIRC), 3rd or 4th biggest in Europe (IIRC), uses RPM from RedHat, has poor admin tools (IMO), includes only 300 or so apps in the $149 Pro version, big GNOME supporter (and desktop defaults to GNOME), good documentation.

From what I read on the various lists, you should avoid Reiserfs for a while until recovery tools are better. (Just my opinion, of course.)
Absolutely. I had some bizarre, irrecoverable filesystem problems with Reiserfs on 6.4 a little bit ago and was too unnerved to install Reiserfs on with 7.0 at work. In addition to unstable recovery tools some basic tools such as dump are still missing AFAIK. Greg

It is amazing how YMMV... I have ReiserFS on SuSE 6.4 at work, which has had it's reset button punched a few times and Reiser did it's job. The box has been up about three months now, except for the resets. I have SuSE 7.0 with ReiserFS installed here at home. So far no complaints, but it's only been up 21 days since I did a kernel recompile. JLK -- Scientific theories, according to Sir Karl Popper, can be "falsified," or proven wrong, by experiment. My problems didn't even result from a power problem, they showed up on a regular reboot. Also, everyone's mileage is the same when simple utilities such as dump are missing (is dump available yet?). Greg

mmm. what kind of hardware are you running? What HD and bios? Why doesn't tar or cpio work?
