I've got Wvdial working, very easy, very nice. I do have one problem with it. I can only run it from root. When I set up my user account I gave it access to the modem. But when I try to run WVdial from user I get
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyS1: Permission denied
It works fine under root. Any ideas what to do?
Try adding your user to the uucp and dialout groups if you haven't already done that. And check if /dev/ttyS1 has the proper permissions (owner: root, group: uucp, mode: 660). Ciao, Stefan

change the permission of /dev/ttyS1 to 777
No don't do that. This is BAD advice. A sledgehammer is not required to crack a nut. It is better not to get around configuration problems you dont understand by giving all the world and it's mother all possible permissions ! One day such an action will bite back.. Cliff

Make sure the users are in group uucp and/or group dialout.. (look which group owns the modem device, it will be one of those two) Cliff p.s. typing "id" will tell someone what groups they are in

Also check the group owner for /etc/wvdial.conf. After editing mine with Kedit, it changed the group owner to root, and only allowed root to dial out. The owner should be root/dialout. -- Joe & Sesil Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://home.beseen.com/churches/joe_morris
