Hi! Ok, thanks for your answer but I wanna be sure to understand correctly before to go on to prevent to do big mistakes... So, I can boot with the win2k CD to install it and I can install it on my second hard drive with my linux installed on the first? Is it right? The problem I think I will have is that win2k will erase the MBR to install its boot loader there, so I will lose the part of disk that contains lilo, so I will not be able to boot linux except if I use a floppy disk. It is still right? And what to do to have dual boot with lilo between SuSE and win2k? This part, I'm really not sure... Still thanks On Fri, 2002-06-14 at 20:37, Ben Jones wrote: Martin Richard wrote: > Hi! > > Can I install it on the other disk to dual boot with my linux without having > to reinstall linux? If yes how? It works fine, although bear in mind that windows will not play fair with your MBR. You can either use the NT bootloader, or repair SuSE's back to the MBR, which is a lot easier... cheers, Ben -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com

~ maybe, w2k may insist on installing on first HardDisk. so, maybe, swap your hard disks, changing the Jumpers on 1st HD to become Slave, and , on 2nd Disk to become Master. Because w2k will prolly insist on writing your MBR , it may be handy, before you start, to put Lilo on a Floppy disk. ~ after your new installation is complete, you can boot linux from floppy, and then re-run LILO to write to MBR with dual-boot instruction :) best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________

Very sensible :)

Yes.

Correct. Upon install, windows will overwrite the mbr, and out it's own bootloader in there. This doens't pose that big of a problem though. Because
And what to do to have dual boot with lilo between SuSE and win2k? This part, I'm really not sure...
once W$ is happily (?) installed, boot your SuSE (by way of floppy/cd) and either manually or through yast reinstall lilo to the mbr. Lilo should have no problem booting windows. I have no eXPerience with windows, beyond w98, so I don't know of any problem that w2k could have, getting booted from lilo. But essentially what is needed in lilo.conf is an entry such as: other = /dev/hdb1 label = windows -or similar. Add this manually to lilo.conf, and run lilo from the command-line, *or* do it through yast. Like I said, I don't know if w2k needs something special wrt booting, but the above always worked for me, with w98. At any rate there will be no harm done to your SuSE, and so there's no great loss if this somehow fails ;) Have fun! hth Jon Clausen

I have a dual boot with Win 2k and SUSE 7.3. I don't experience any lasting problems. Once in a blue moon, Win 2k won't complete the boot (grey screen) and I will have to force a restart, but I wouldn't necessarily say that SuSE is causing the problems. It could just be a poor install job done by the idiots that installed my Win 2k system. Jon's description sounds like the right path to go. Cheers, Brian
