Hi, I am using Suse 9.0 and I got a strange problem. I am not able to log as root anymore :..( root account is disabled Yesterday everything was working fine and now I can't use root account I tried without success - Log using su - Log in console mode - Log using ssh from another computer - Use rescue boot from CD When I am using rescue system from boot CD I don't know what can I do because I can't start yast or acceed to configuration files on my HD. Is somebody got a similar problem ? What can I try to reactivate the root account ? How a root account can be desactivated in normal use of your computer ???? Thanks -- ----------------------------------- Willy Reinhardt

Are you getting a paswword error? If so, you may be able to boot from the install CD and remove the root password and then when you reboot, log in as root, without password and recreate one.

No I get a message "Login for root is disabled" if I try to open a Xsession. With text mode I get message "Login: no shell No such file or directory" note the directory /root still exist. -- ----------------------------------- Willy Reinhardt

Is root still listed in /etc/passwd & /etc/shadow?

I can't read shadow but for passwd I have root:x:0:0:root:/root:exit I don't no why exit replace /bin/bash because I don't edit that file or user access recently ?? I should try to edit passwd file using rescue cd I think. -- ----------------------------------- Willy Reinhardt

Just use vi to edit the file.

No need to use the rescue CD. Log in as a normal user and, from a console, use: su - -s /bin/bash This should allow you to log in as root and override any shell that /etc/passwd has listed. Once in, edit /etc/passwd to change the shell to a working one. That may be your problem. That line won't let root log in. My passwd file shows: root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash You should be able to edit it, when booting from the CD. My shadow file shows this: root:$1$XQwzNYzz$TzF7J4PpGzivFzaJHrKXr1:12599:0:10000:::: Your's is problably not exactly like mine. ;-)

I read you have corrected that, but I would worry very much not knowing how it was changed. Worst, by whom. I would start getting paranoid and look for unauthorized entry. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

James, Thanks for your help I get back my root account by using the rescue boot system. Thanks and regards -- ----------------------------------- Willy Reinhardt
