How, please, may i achieve an ascii log-in. { have looked at Yast2 run-levels dialog, but remain confused.} thanks :) best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________
It's in YaST2. But the easest way is to edit /etc/inittab and set initdefault to 3. On 5 Jun 2002 at 21:09, tabanna wrote:

go into yast2 run-levels, and change from 5 to 3. when you reboot you will get an ascii logon because X isn't running. if you just want an ascii login while still starting X simply press "Control-Alt-F1" up to "Control-Alt-F6" for 6 ascii logins. Ewan On Wed, 2002-06-05 at 22:09, tabanna wrote:

I have to admit that I find YaST2 confusing at times as well. I really did prefer YaST1! It might be simpler to edit /etc/inittab (as root) Look for the line: id:5:initdefault and change it to id:3:initdefault David

and change it to
id:3:initdefault
If I recall, some people have said that if you manually edit /etc/inittab to change runlevel 5 to runlevel 3, it will work fine until the next time you run SUSEconfig, which will set it back again to runlevel 5. I don't know if that's true as I didn't try it. I did use the runlevel editor in Yast2 to set my default to runlevel 3, and this has permanently given me a text login. Actually, even with a runlevel 3 init, you will still probably have a VESA graphic "text" screen. If you want a plain vanilla black & white text screen (which is what I prefer), edit lilo.conf and change the line that says "vga=771" (it might be another number besides 771) to "vga=normal", and run /sbin/lilo, then reboot and then your screen really will be text only. - Robert Storey
