[opensuse] Missing functionality in Gnome Updater and YOU?
1) openSUSE Updater (Gnome) In preferences I've tried to check both "include optional patches" as well as "include 3rd party updates". The updater works, but ..... How to see the details which updates are installed, confirm and possiby uncheck unwished updates, as well as seeing the elapsed time bar? 2) YOU (Gnome) The new YOU interface includes recommended patches and optional updates (not more than the Updater does as far as I can see). How to check for and upgrade to other, newer software versions for All Packages? So far in 10.3 as a workaround I've had to install and login to a KDE session instead, to do what previous worked in Gnome as well: YaST2>Software>Online Update Package menu>All packages>Update if newer versions are available --Terje -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

1.I agree that the updater needs to show the status of downloading
packages, and a list of what it's downloading. Perhaps that what they
can use the "Details" button for, rather than launching the whole YaST
module.
2. I'm not sure what you're talking about, but somebody else probably
will :)

2) As an example: Just now, my Gnome Updater applet icon looks like an orange sun icon. Opening it, it tells there is 1 single update available. As already said, it isn't possible to verify which package this update is for. Quitting the Updater without doing that update, and starting YOU instead YaST2>Software>Online Update This just open the new Gnome Patch Selector window. Remarkable this windows is empty, showing that it obviously doesn't include 3rd party updates. There is no menu or toolbar on this Patch selector to look for possibly other updates for "All packages". Logout from Gnome and doing a login to KDE and start YOU from there instead YaST2>Software>Online Updates selecting Package menu>All packages>Update if newer versions are available This shows 4 updates and which packages they count for. This time, just 2 of them could be installed do to dependices conflicts. Yesterday I found 74 updates in KDE YOU. --Terje -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

YOU never has performed "third party" updates, only security and critical updates. I think I have seen where YOU do "third party" updates in a future release. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Default security and critical updates, yes. Not quite sure what "3rd party update" mean in the Updater's terminology. But by selecting 10.3 "Software repositories for openSUSE" like Packman, VideoLan, openSUSE Buildservice-Mozilla or -OpenOffice, one can use KDE YOU's menu "Package>All Packages>Update if newer versions are available" to upgrade these packages. Correspondingly backport repositories could be added and used i 10.2 YOU I think. I.e yesterday I upgraded Seamonkey from 1.1.4 to 1.1.5 with KDE YOU. This could also be done with the identical YOU in 10.2 Gnome, or by using the Package menu from "Add/Remove Software" as well. --Terje -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And yet, 10.3 KDE YOU contains more updates than Gnome YOU (Patch_Selector) or Updater Details. I checked first in KDE YOU: 2 updates available (didn't install them) Then with Gnome Updater: 1 update available, installed it Verified with Gnome YOU that now was empty Went back to KDE YOU, and could still install the additional update Why? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Checked now on 10.2 Gnome YOU which I hadn't updated recently. Seamonkey 1.1.5 isn't on the default update list in the left window, neither among the security (red), suggested (blue) nor optional (black) patches. Selecting the menu Package>All Packages>Update if newer versions are available, then Seamonkey 1.1.5 appears in the right window. --Terje -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In 10.2 it is possible to upgrade non security updates, like for instance, from the stable / unstable openoffice repos. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
