Thanks for the help, but..
I checked passwd and shadow, they seem ok (account machine$ is there as
created by 'add machine script'). Since im using tdbsam, there is no
smbpasswd file, but a passdb.tdb. Issuing a pdbedit -Lv shows root and
other data not seem to be related to the repeated computer name.
Tried also a tdbdump passdb.tdb and showed info about users and trust
relationships but again no data about the repeated computer name. Any more
ideas?
(forgot to say it's a suse 9.1 updated online, so no doubt about the
operating system or version errors)
Thanks again

Hi all
Im having this issue on a test PDC samba server. Tried to make a win2k machine a domain member, it asks the name and password to join the domain, then enter root and passwd... it takes about 1 or 2 minutes, then it says "welcome to tmq2", it seems ok, then restart to make changes take effect, BUT, just before having to press ctrl-alt-del, it appears an error message about a repeated machine name (dont have the exact message english, the spanish is "Existe un nombre duplicado en la red"), the fact is i cant start session but on the same machine. I double checked everything and i am stuck, help please. This is part of smb.conf: (...)
Being out of domain, check /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow and look for the machine account (its the machine name followed by a $ - like pepe$) - samba needs it and sometimes samba can't create by himself. Then check /etc/samba/smbpasswd and remove this account of the list (or just comment it with a #) - samba is able to create here, without problems. This account will be created when the machine enters the domain. This delay is normal; don't know why it happens (with winXP is almost instantaneous - but XP needs samba 3.x) you can also try to create these accounts by hand, but remember to use the same UID, right GID, etc. I think that the account name must be the same of the windows machine name - must be unique across your network Some people say you have to change something in the registry, but I don't remeber if I did that or not. Also I'm not sure, but I think win2k doesn't need samba 3.x. -- Marcos Lazarini -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Hummm, some more ideas pdbedit -Lv | grep Unix | sort -u | wc -l will output the number of samba accounts pdbedit -Lv | grep Unix | sort | wc -l will output the number of unique samba accounts it should be the same google also told me some interessting stuff: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-ntdom/2001-February/017635.html
That message is usually associated with another windows/samba machine having the same netbios name on the network. ... ... somtime ago domain and pdc could have the same name and there were roumors of this causing problems. And I can confirm that a couple of mysterious problems went away when I changed the name of the domain.
