I like it the way it is... I don't run GNOME, but I use Mozilla on KDE. Therefore ULB is a great site! Wouldn't it be an idea to become none-GNOME specific? But instead a site for alternative SuSE specific packages? So everyone who has a SuSE-fied package which is not available from SuSE itself can provide you/ULB with this package... Just a thought ;-) Keep up the good work! Regards Harry

I've been thinking about the future of usr local bin, whether to create a full GNOME install (probably starting with GNOME 2.4.0 when it comes out) for SuSE, or whether to just stick with doing the apps, and occasionally have to let versions lag as I wait for an updated SuSE release (as happened in the run-up to 8.2 with Gnumeric and AbiWord) when major things change under the hood.
My musings are in my latest Blog entry on www.rubberturnip.org.uk and I'd appreciate any thoughts people, especially those who already use the packages from my site, may have.
Thanks for your time guys, the great feedback I get has really kept the site going so far.

James - I'm with Harry. I don't use Gnome - only KDE - but I use Mozilla and Evolution, so always get your versions. Of course, the bottom line is that you have to do what pleases *you* (but I really hope you'll continue to do the apps). Thanks so much for all the work you've done so far. I don't think there's any chance of me stopping providing app builds for vanilla SuSE installs, my concern is that I'm increasingly finding myself having to cover the gaps (at the moment, there's gnome-sesssion, gtk2 and gnome-panel packages, and I'm planning a control-center2 package to enable gnome-settings-daemon in KDE so that GTK2 themes work properly while in KDE). This leads to it only being a short step to just doing a full GNOME distribution for SuSE. The question becomes "can I afford to that" and the answer is "not at the moment", hence my PayPal musings. It's all the fault of a certain other former-SuSE employee who suggested I should set up a PayPal account for it... -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.2) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Well, that's not likely to happen (see packman's site for a more general updates site). The point of the site has always been to fill in the gaps caused by SuSE's GNOME blind-spot. There's a whole big rant about SuSE's attitude toward GNOME waiting to happen, but this isn't the time ;) -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.2) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Harry, It already exist, although it does not have a slick webpage. go here: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/ Select your distribution and pick your favorite suse 3rd party packager. It includes James' urs-local-bin, pkg from suse users as well as some additional stuff from suse. And if you wanna know what has been updated, take a peek here: http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/freshrpms.html let me know if you've some pkgs around that you want to share, it's easy to get them here. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
