Hi, I installed Suse 10.0amd_64 without desktop (headless). It works fine, but now I need to run a desktop on that server (KDE). How should I go about? Is it easier to reinstall? thanks for any advice, Arno

There's absolutely no need to reinstall! Just start up YaST and invoke the Software Management module. Then select Selections from the Filter pop-up menu and select one or both of the KDE options. You can go to the Package Groups section (also from the Filter menu) and find packages by category and add (or exclude) other packages. If when you click the Accept button to begin the installation you see a notice of additional packages, just say OK. You should not (but might) see a conflict dialog. If so, you'll have to use it to resolve the conflict before installing. But if you're using only stock installation sources (the DVD or the SuSE servers or mirrors thereof), that shouldn't happen.
thanks for any advice, Arno
Good luck. Randall Schulz
Hi, I installed the packages for KDE. I also enabled Vnc and when I connect to Vnc, I get a gray screen and the mousepointer is an 'x'. But I don't get a login. What do I need to start up to get to the login? I typed 'init 5' to change the runlevel but that didn't change anything. Any hints? Thanks, Arno Randall R Schulz wrote:

I had thought some form of desktop was going to be installed one way or the other. You can toss in the install disk at boot, and opt to install, but then add packages, you'll figure out the prompts. There is an n-curses based YaST as well.
