[SLE] Which graphic card for good 3D and good TV?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Right now I have a Matrox G400 dual head, which works wonder under Linux. The only problem is that it's rather poor for 3D performance (i.e. games). Do anyone have any advice for a newer card? I need a good TV out, so I'm a bit reluctant with GeForce cards. Are there any newer Matrox card that are good for 3D? Or are there any GeForce with a *correct* TV out? What about ATI? Your G400 was the last MGA card that had supported TV-out in Linux. Someone managed to get the FB TV-out working on the G450 and G500, though. Matrox has abandoned their attempts at making us Linux perople happy. I had a G450 and got sick of the poor performance myself. I ended up getting a GF4-Ti4200, which has worked perfectly and reliably. The TV-out is very crisp over SVideo and I have Freevo running on the second head. Now all I need is for mplayer to not grab my mouse and keyboard... - -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+0kXb+FOexA3koIgRAjxqAKCeDcoBrUThcBGg5r04IxQzv5jaPACdHI6N YsZU5G4gYtojQLdnNE3Rug0= =4Jc0 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Hi Thibaut. Actually there is a program called nvtv. It has it own daemon as well. Some of the features included are: Mode, which include NTSC, various versions of PAL and SECAM as well as the resolutions of 640x480 to 800x576, various sizes (small to huge) and DVD mode. Position to move set the window box parameters, Settings like Dualvew, monochrome, macrovision, colorfix, non-interlaced, free-carrier. Also contrast, saturation, brightness, phase, hue, flicker, bandwidth, sharpness.. Config with tv on/off switch, X mode, X switch, X center, X resize, value reset, print values, the specific vid card and tv encorder. Ports with the device (Monitor, TV, Flatpanel, Overlay), host port master/slave and high/low for clock, sync, blank (with in/out, high/low/ region/dotclock), format (with RGB, YCrCb, normal/alternatie) and encoder port settings that are similar. You can also config/set the nv regs, BT calc, BT regs 1/2/3 and see the status of the card. I have yet to hook a card up, but I looks like a vast improvement to the version at and before 8.1 (I'm using 8.2). I understand your reservations about using a nvidia card. I follow vid card devel fairly closely, and ATi is kicking some serious butt. However, they have, and continue to, lag somewhat on making a robust driver set for Linux (pity). Some swear by it but I understand it can be inconsistent (driver wise that is). Nvidia's drivers work nicely and the new nvidia "run" routine program to install the drivers simplifies things a fari amount. Just something to consider. Cheers, Curtis.
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Thanks to James and Curtis for their quick answers! You indeed helped me a lot (I was considering buying a G550 dual head, now I'm not so sure). My reservation about Nvidia is not about the closed source drivers, it's because I know that some Nvdia have very, very bad quality TV-out. It's nice to see that some cards are not so bad, so I'll try to find the same as you. James, you have a Ge4-Ti4200, Curtis, which one do you have? Thanks again, Le Lundi 26 Mai 2003 20:54, Curtis Rey a écrit :

Just something to consider. Just a note The nVidia GIIMX400 based XTASY EVERYTHING Personal Cinema has the best looking broadcast TV I have ever seen on a PC. On local broadcast here in Chicago the standard NTSC rivals 480i HDTV for picture quality. The Bad news is that there seems to be no support for it in linux. I have asked on a number of lists and heard nothing positive. I noticed that Curtiss R mentioned nvtv, but I haven't a clue. The Visiontek EXTASY EVERYTHING Personal Cinema is just superb on XP tho HTH, ................ I have a GF3-ti200. But with the GF-FX series out now the price of either a GF3 or 4 should drop considerably. If you go for a GF3 get the ti500, faster chipset/ramdac, etc.... or GF4 anything but MX. Actually I believe the GF4 has better overlay abilities. HTH. Curtis.

Thanks. I gave a phone call to my usual computer shop, the prices have indeed dropped with the arrival of the new FX. He could sell me a Ge4 Ti4200 for 140€ (128 Mo). According to him the TV-out is only average quality, but I know he's a very demanding person, so let's say it is OK. ;-) Like you, he doesn't like the MX, but he didn't tell me why. Why don't you recommend it? Nvidia's MX are usually thier 'second best' sets. And often have less memory. It's not that they aren't good vid cards, it's just that they over charge a little more than on the higer end b/c it's still 'Nvidia', but it's not nearly the 'good' stuff.
