[SLE] Winfault security
IŽm asking for apologies in advance because I know this isnŽt a list to discuss winfault security issues but perhaps someone could help!!!! A long time ago IŽve heard from someone that in windows9x you could add some key into the registry so that users canŽt enter to the system with the Esc key or pressing the "Cancel" button, if this is true or if there is some program to do so, someone could tell me about it? Thanks!!!! \\\ | /// \\~ ~// ( @ @ ) -------------oOOo-(_)-oOOo-------- Seeya, in the mix Marcelo e-mail: mbuil@infovia.com.ar ICQ # : 13497166 ----------------------Oooo.------- oooO ( ) ( ) ) / \ ( (_/ \_) ================================= ° In Defenze Of the Danze Muzik ° ================================= -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

The win95netbugs faq is still the best overall commentary on win9x security that I am aware of, and it hasn't been updated since before Win98 came out. Brief summary: if you remove all the security holes from Windows 9x, you have a bare hard drive. This specific thing, I know a 60% solution, and I'm pretty sure it's covered in the aforementioned faq. Any of the search engines ought to be able to find it, given the name. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I've been wondering about this for a while... I have actually done this before, so I knew it was possible - but when I came to setting up a new Win98 computer (I had no control over OS :( ) I couldn't remember the correct registry key. A bit of digging turned up: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/Forum2/HTML/005451.html In summary: First they said it couldn't be done (which I knew to be untrue) - but then it turned out that it *was* possible to do this, but only on an NT network (which makes sense, since I, regrettably, have an NT Server box). The relevant registry key (assuming you also have an NT server) is: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon] "MustBeValidated"=dword:00000001 Make sure you take the usual precautions before you muck about with the registry. I was just thinking (strange concept, I know...) that to these Windows users, an NT network means 'real network with servers'. Since this registry key only makes sure that the logon *was* actually validated by the server, I don't see why this shouldn't work with a Samba server as well. Enough of my ramblings (and sorry for the OT post, but I thought it might be of interest), Chris -- Apologies to everyone who has been waiting for replies off me over the past few weeks - I've been away from my computer. I'll try to catch up with my email over the coming days, but don't be surprised if you get a reply in a month's time... __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
hi all what you could also do (it would make some eye-candy as well, is, rename your favorite screensaver from *.scr to *.exe, and enter it in , i think win.ini in the line already containing "shell=explorer.exe" to make: shell=explorer.exe tubes.exe of course, you will have to set a password for the screensaver, for this to be additional security. you may have to change around the order of the two "shells" or if the line does not exist in win.ini, then add it somewhere near the top. check the other winsys files, if the relevant file is not win.ini i did this a few years ago, so some of the details may be flaky in my memory ,so write write back, if you have further probs greets, alex On Wed, 19 Apr 2000, Chris Reeves wrote:

Thanks guys for the help that you gave me, both tricks worked perfectly!!!!! When I called the Microsoft Support Team of Argentina they told me it was impossible so I get frustrated but when today I received this messages the first thing I did was to test them and they worked!!!! So it works under Samba Servers the trick you send me Chris. This mailing list is great, even the topics that have nothing to do with it are solved here!!!!!! Thanks again and good luck!!! \\\ | /// \\ ~ ~ // ( @ @ ) -------------oOOo-(_)-oOOo-------- Seeya, in the mix Marcelo e-mail: mbuil@infovia.com.ar ICQ # : 13497166 ----------------------Oooo.------- oooO ( ) ( ) ) / \ ( (_/ \_) ================================= ° In Defenze Of the Danze Muzik ° =================================
